Carl Miller

Carl Miller, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away on September 23, 2026 at the age of 94. Carl was born on November 8, 1931 the fifth and youngest child of Thurimas Miller and Christina (Brauns) Miller. His father passed away just six weeks after Carl’s birth. There was never much money in the family, but they learned the value of hard work – a lesson Carl embraced throughout his life, modeled for others, and passed onto his family.

He attended Iowa State University, where he earned his doctor of veterinary science in 1955. It was there, at a square dance that he met Margery Held. They shared 67 years of marriage until Margery’s passing in 2022.

Carl enjoyed a 30 year career at the National Institute of Health, including international travel through his work with the cholera vaccine program. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved being in nature. He took his family on memorable vacations to national parks across the country and enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

During his retirement years, Carl divided his time between Pennsylvania and Florida, where he participated in many service projects. He and Marge especially enjoyed Ellenton United Methodist Church, where they worked at the annual fair booth to raise money for mission projects. They remained square dancers into their 60s and participated in as many Tideview Estate events as possible.

Carl loved taking his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren for rides on his golf cart. He delighted in sharing his many wildlife sightings along the way, creating cherished memories and passing along his love of the natural world.

Carl was Marge’s devoted caregiver until her death. His love, care, and dedication, allowed her to remain in her home. His stamina was remarkable.

Carl will be remembered for his generosity, intelligence, service, and constant desire to make everyone’s job a little easier. His life was defined by hard work, curiosity, devotion to family, and a deep commitment to others. He is deeply missed.

Carl was predeceased by his parents, his brother and three sisters, and his beloved wife Margery. He has survived by three children, Carol (Rob) Baird, David (Robin) Miller and Linda (Mark) Evans; seven grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. His family will carry forward the lessons he taught through his example: to work hard, care for others, appreciate the natural world and find joy in time spent together.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl’s honor to the Child Health Foundation, Heifer International or Southeast Guide Dogs for the Blind. Such gifts reflect the compassionate spirit of service that guided Carl throughout his life.
