She is preceded in death by her son-in-law, Jeffrey Gibbs, and is survived by her husband of 73 years, Glenn Himes. She will be greatly missed by her children, Martha Hagaman (David), Carol Gibbs, and Susan Krebs (David), and their grandchildren Daniel Hagaman, Matthew Gibbs (Erica), Sarah Hagaman, Brendan Gibbs (Savannah), Tyler Krebs (Megan), Benjamin Hagaman (Sara), Christian Gibbs (fiancée Sarah), and Halle Strachan (Daniel). She was great-grandmother to three. Carmen received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Purdue University and met her “buddy,” Glenn, when at Purdue. They were married in 1953 and lived in New York State (Utica), Lafayette, and Indianapolis, Indiana, before making Columbus home. Before working as a food stylist, Carmen taught food and nutrition at Purdue University and in Indiana schools. She was active in University Women’s Club, OSU Agricultural Circle, Home Economists in Business, Church offices and activities, volunteered at food and clothing centers, and worked as a room mother in UA schools. She held offices in the Altar Guild and the Four Seasons Garden Club. Carmen had the unique ability to make things beautiful, turning the ordinary into works of art: from dinner parties to ice cream socials, Carmen made people feel welcome and recognized everyone’s unique gifts. Her garden was one of her great joys, and she generously shared her flowers, food, and laughter.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on October 24 at 11 am. Relatives and friends will be received after the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Glenn C. Himes Endowed Scholarship Fund by calling 614-292-2281 Scholarship code 643203, or The Trinity Foundation at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1581 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, OH 43212.
