Carole Elizabeth Groselle, known fondly as Rusty for her red hair, age 84, passed away peacefully November 15, 2019 due to complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was born December 30, 1934 in Gardner, Massachusetts to Mark and Mildred Stevens. She married John Henry Wuorinen in 1956. Her second marriage in May of 1976 was to John Benjamin Groselle who preceded her in death in 2000.
Rusty's love of volunteering led to a career in professional volunteer management. She worked at CALLVAC, United Way, WOSU, and directed the Volunteer Corp. of the city of Columbus. Highlights of her career included volunteer oversight for the Son of Heaven exhibit in 1989 and for the Ameriflora international event in 1992.
Rusty graduated from Middlebury College with a degree in American history. She was a self-described "cock-eyed optimist" with an energetic and creative spirit. She was famous for her meatloaf that everyone loved and for her holly-cake that everyone pretended to love. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, gardening, classical music, theater, travel and home improvement projects. Rusty never met a stranger, enjoyed a glass of white wine -- with an ice cube to keep it chilled -- each evening, and was very proud of her family.
Rusty is survived by her four children and their spouses Alice and Bill Baldwin, Maggie and Jim Koerner, John Wuorinen and Liz Nusken, and Susie Wuorinen and Mike Mills. She is also survived by grandchildren Beth, Tom, Jimmy, Gavin, Conrad, Alec, Calvin, Dawson, Lydia, and Abby.
A private celebration of Rusty's life is planned for later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Columbus Academy at columbusacademy.org or to the Alzheimer's Association at act.alz.org.
