Charlie Mueller was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1936. He attended University of Cincinnati where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees. He completed his radiology residency before practicing radiology in the air force at Wright Patterson Air Force base. He met his wife, Kathe Mueller, in medical school. She was one of only a handful of female medical students at the time. Impressed by her intellect and her loving heart, they were soon married on May 28, 1966. After 6 years in New Mexico, they moved back to Ohio and Charlie served as the program director of radiology at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He was known to sneak off on a sunny afternoon to go fly fishing at Briarwood, one of his favorite hobbies. He and Kathe have three children, Charles (Chuck) Jeffrey Mueller (married to Susan Daly Mueller), Theodore (Ted) Martin Mueller (married to Julie Robertson Mueller), and Kathryn Suzanne Mueller (married to Michael “Wes” Milks). In 1989, Charlie and Kathe purchased what would be lovingly referred to as “the land” a wooded property where they would come to spend many joyful weekends camping, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors with their children. Charlie had a fruitful career in radiology being both a founding member and president of the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER), active member of the Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA) and interim chairman of the department of Radiology at Ohio State.
While work limited his time at home in his younger years, retirement did quite the opposite. Kathe and he (now Meemaw and Papa) enthusiastically took up daily care of their local grandchildren, taking them to and from school, playing with them, and patiently helping them read and learn. “Meemaw and Papa’s” house remains a second home for grandchildren Teddy (8 yrs), Lena (5 yrs) and Conrad (2 yrs). Twice a year for Christmas and Summer vacation at Lakeside Marblehead Charlie and Kathe hosted a week long get together to ensure they got to see their California grandchildren Amelia (17 yrs) and Charlie (15 yrs) and North Carolina grandchildren Henry (15 yrs) and William (Bo) (13 yrs). Charlie spent the evening before his passing building an AI robot for his very excited grandson, Teddy. He finished it.
As his daughter, I know Charlie will be remembered for his warm hugs and loving heart, always open to family, neighbor or stranger. He was known for getting so absorbed in conversation that he’d leave a hat, coat or scarf behind, many a hat lost in this way. Now his hat hangs on the children’s coat rack in their house, left behind for the eternal embrace of the lord.
There will be a memorial service for Charlie at Covenant Presbyterian Church Saturday, March 29th, starting at 10:30AM in the Sanctuary, and there will be a luncheon and visitation starting at 11:45AM in the Fellowship Hall.
