January 10, 1985 - February 8, 2013
Cincinnati, OH
Son of Charles J. Kovach - Bristol RI and Linda J. (Tancey ) Kovach - Venice, FL.
He was a resident of Columbus, employed at Staples ( Olentangy and Lewis Center) in technical support and sales.
Chris was an only child surrounded by loving family in Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Florida, as well as good friends.
Chris graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati OH in 2003, with a love for marching band and music of all sorts. He worked on the yearbook staff and developed an interest in photography there. He went on to attend Ohio State University in Columbus OH majoring first in Engineering but quickly changed to Japanese. While at OSU he worked with teams to improve the web pages for the Language Department. His passion for networking, web design, and problem solving had begun!
While at St. Xavier, he worked backstage in a couple of theatre productions. Then, with several friends, he made a short film based on the Star Wars characters. Much of it was filmed in Ault Park, complete with stunts, costumes, and light sabers.
He considered himself The Omni-Player, learning to play the clarinet, alto and tenor saxophones, horns of all sorts, slide trombone, trumpet, guitar and piano. He owned a drum and a violin as well. Perhaps this grew out of those early days at the Baldwin Piano preschool classes. His father, being an artist working with toy modeling at Kenner, helped him to develop his own artistic talents preferring the medias of pen and ink.
Chris prided himself on having Scottish ancestors. One Mother's Day we went to General Butler Park in northern Kentucky. It was the last day of the Scottish Festival. As soon as we arrived I sensed he must feel right at home. All sorts of large men with argyle socks with tassels, over their bulging calf muscles, long hair, and every sort of plaid pattern imaginable, were throwing telephone poles and eating Scottish egg. He was in heaven as he walked around towering over his short parents while working on his Scottish brogue.
In high school he emulated his father by learning German. He and his friends became interested in anime and followed that interest by changing his major to Japanese Language and Culture. He was so taken by their culture that he put his mattress on the floor and ate his meals with chopsticks. He took all sorts of martial arts classes.
Chris was fascinated with how machines worked having played with Legos and Transformers. He would be bored in the car and choose to read the automobile's owner's manual. Once at a garage sale he paid a quarter to buy the owner's manual for an Evinrude motor. We did not have an Evinrude motor, but he was engrossed in the schematics and specifications of the motor. In time his interest progressed to computer technology. With his skills, he networked the entire OSU house, where he and his house mates lived.
One of his newer interests was healthy home cooking. Chris would frequently call his mother for cooking tips and old family recipes. He had the whole collection of Good Eats from the Food Network with Alton Brown, but Skyline Chili and his own home brew remained his favorites.
Some saw Chris as a romantic Bohemian with a mustache, beard, and long hair. When he decided to cut his hair to accommodate a new position at work years ago, he donated the hair to Locks Of Love.
He had a love of books and the handling of them was deliberate. He could read the whole novel without bending the cover or creasing the spine.
Christopher's organizations included:
Pragmatics Project, member.
Eggsperts Panel, founding member.
EOK, Sci-Fi Club's Media Group
OS University Band
OSU Athletic Band
St. Xavier's Yearbook Club, lead image editor and assistant photographer
St. Xavier's High School Marching Band
