David is preceded in death by his parents Margaret Jean and Clyde Williamson; father in law Basil Fitchpatrick; brother in law Mike Burke. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years Theresa; sister Vickey Burke; sons Mark (Afton), Matthew (Kirstie) and Ryan (Kayli). He is also survived by mother in law Gloria Fitchpatrick; sister in law Cathy Starkey (Steve); brother in law Floyd Muncey (Rose); brother in law Jonathan Fitchpatrick (Judy); nieces and nephews: Patrick Burke (Jen), Catherine Burke, Lydia Marcum (Derrick), Zach, Dusty, Joey Starkey Caitlin Starkey (Nick), great niece Lynley, plus all extended family.
David was a 1980 graduate of Brookhaven High School where he played football and baseball. David dedicated his life to the Columbus community serving its citizens for 33 years as a firefighter with Columbus Fire Department, attaining the rank of Lieutenant before retiring. He also taught at the Columbus Fire Academy and Delaware Career Center mentoring future firefighters. David started his fire career at Clinton Township and also served at Westerville Fire Department.
He loved sports and coached many young men at Gladden Community House, Forest Park Baseball and the St. James the Less football and baseball programs. He loved his Saint Francis DeSales High School Stallions and served as the President of the Athletic Association for 4 years. He wore lots of purple throughout the years cheering on SFD, Ashland University and Mount Union University. Then he wore green and gold for the Wright State University hockey team. David also played softball in Central Ohio for many years. He then got the hockey bug and played with the Columbus Fire Department hockey team. He then played on Sunday evening with a group of youngsters that included his son Ryan. He was known as the “old man” or “Colossal Clyde”. He absolutely loved playing with all of them. David took up long distance bike riding about 20 years ago. There wasn’t a sport that he didn’t like except soccer.
He loved days at Indian Lake with friends.
He had a large “family” that included friends, firefighters, DeSales, the lake and hockey. He had a kind heart, was giving, caring and generous with his love. His finale role in the fire service was being President of the Central Ohio Firefighters Association #4 Unit. He loved working with his retired firefighter brothers. Now he has transitioned to #5 Unit.
Family will receive friends 3-7pm Monday, November 13, 2023 at Advantage by Schoedinger North, 5554 Karl Road, where his Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, November 14th Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
