

He was born on October 2, 1942 in Akron, Ohio to John and Helen Hartney. He moved to Ashland, Ohio as a young boy. He was a 1960 graduate of Ashland High School and attended Ohio University where he was a member of the varsity track and cross country teams. He was also a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He transferred to The Ohio State University in 1964 where he graduated in 1965.
He began his teaching and coaching career at Hastings Jr. High in Upper Arlington in 1965 where he taught history and government and coached boys basketball, cross country and track. In 1977 he moved to Upper Arlington High School where for the next 28 years he taught history and government and coached girls and boys basketball and girls and boys cross country and track. During that time he coached numerous league, district, and regional cross country and track champions, three girls cross country state champions, and one girls state championship runner up in track.
Many of his former athletes have gone on to run in college and to continue on as teachers and coaches.
In 1988 he received the Summa Cum Laude Award from Upper Arlington Education Association for his teaching excellence. In 2001 he was inducted into the Ohio Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame. In 2013 he was awarded the Lou Berliner Award for his exemplary contribution to high school athletics and in 2018 he was inducted to the Upper Arlington High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Dorothy Hartney, his brother, Alan Hartney, and is brother-in-law, Douglas Clark.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Diane (Clark) Hartney, daughter, Erin Layden, granddaughters, Lydia and Anna Layden, twin brother, Gale Hartney, brother and sister-in-law, David and Sherry Hartney, sister-in-law, Terri Hartney, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Upper Arlington on Saturday, August 10th at 2 PM with private interment in the church’s memorial garden followed by a reception at the church. Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 9th from 4 PM to 8 PM at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, 43221.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2152 Dorset Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1379 Dublin Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
