After graduating from Hershey High School, he briefly worked at the Hershey Chocolate Factory. In 1976 after leaving the factory he joined Toledo Scale (currently Mettler Toledo).
During his 38-year career at Mettler Toledo, Darrell made significant contributions across the company. Beginning as a Field Service Technician and then transitioning to Technical Service at the home office, he gained valuable customer experience that prepared him to advance into progressively elevated leadership roles. He led the Weights and Measures division and successfully secured the complex government approvals required to sell the company's products at the local, state, national, and international levels. He established the groundwork for the company's continued success beyond his retirement in 2013. Darrell’s sought after expertise led him to join the National Council on Weights and Measures (NCWM) in 2014 as a Specialist for the National Type Evaluation Program. In this role, he evaluated weighing devices to ensure compliance with national standards and performed audits at manufacturing facilities around the world through NCWM's Verified Conformity Assessment Program. Until his semi-retirement in January 2025, Darrell was an invaluable resource to the weighing industry worldwide, known for his technical expertise, integrity, and desire to advance the industry.
In Darrell’s spare time he enjoyed reading, woodworking, golf, target shooting, tinkering with cars/motorcycles, grilling, and taking the boat out on the lake.
