

David Arbenz Edwards, Sr. age 83 of Columbus, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2010 at his home. He was born August 29, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Hulda Arbenz Edwards. He married the late Nancy Davis in 1948 and had two sons, David Arbenz Edwards, Jr. (Nancy) and James Davis Edwards (Betsy), and loving grandchildren, Jonathan D. Edwards, Curtis C. Edwards, Sean A. Edwards, C. Kyle Edwards (Christine), and Taylor D. Edwards (Dana). David attended Upper Arlington High School and graduated from the Georgia Military Academy. He then attended The United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, where he received his commission in the Merchant Marines and served on board ship during WWII. After the war, he attended The Ohio State University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Tau Beta Pi Association, Chi Epsilon Fraternity a National Honorary Civil Engineering Fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree in 1951. After graduation, he joined his father and late brother, J.T. Edwards, Jr. (Mary Jo) in the family business, The J.T. Edwards Company for the next forty years. He is survived by his sister, Paula Cochran of Boca Raton, FL, brother, Peter H. Edwards, Sr. (Suzie) of Upper Arlington, Ohio, and sister, Judith Sandbo (Doug) of Upper Arlington, Ohio. He is survived by his loving companion, Dorothea (Dotty) Hadler and her loving family who all meant so much to him these last few years. He was an avid tennis player, golfer, fisherman and ping-pong player. He was blessed to have many, many lifelong friends who brought much joy to his life. He was a member of The Presidents Club of The Ohio State University, the Society of Professional Engineers, Scioto Country Club, Rockwell Springs Trout Club, Trout Unlimited life member, Couples Circle of First Community Church, Rotary Club of Columbus, Ohio, Mercator Club, Young Business Man’s Club (YBMC), Crippled Children’s Society/Easter Seals Society, served as chairman of Riverside Methodist Hospital Board of Directors from 1992-94, from 1992-present, the Riverside Methodist Hospital Foundation Board, the Development Board, and the Ohio Health Foundation Board, Recipient of The Ohio State University Department of Engineering 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who meant so much to him. David was an excellent role model for his family. Family will receive friends Wednesday, July 21, 2010 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus. Private burial services will take place at Jerome Twp.
