

David Buchanan Gill, Sr., age 70 of Columbus, passed away October 26, 2011. David was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio son of the late Charles and Aileen Gill. Also preceded in death by his fiancé, Patti Jo Lindahl, and sister, Peggy Lerch. David graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, Class of 1958 and went on to also graduate from The Ohio State University majoring in microbiology. He was later drafted to the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and worked as a military police officer while stationed in Germany. While serving in the Army, he graduated with a Masters in Education from the University of Maryland. On his return home he began teaching German at Upper Arlington High School where he remained until his retirement. He started their German Exchange Program and traveled yearly with students to Germany. While at Upper Arlington, David also coached soccer for many years and was instrumental in introducing soccer to Central Ohio. David was a very kind man and as his yearbook stated, he was “an endless source of wit and fun, a great friend to everyone”. He enjoyed music, maintaining friendships with his former students, and traveling, but most of all, David enjoyed and looked forward to time spent with his son, especially their Friday lunches together. He will be greatly missed by his son, David Gill, Jr.; siblings, Steve and Charles Gill, and Betty Handshey; cousin Bill Buchanan and many other extended family members and dear friends.
