Dennis Arlo Beer

Dennis graduated first in his class of 63 from Springfield Local High School in Ontario, Ohio, in 1960. After receiving a small scholarship to Findlay College, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from The Ohio State University in 1969 and a Master of Arts in 1972.

For 35 years, Dennis taught science in Columbus Public Schools at North, Eastmoor, and Beechcroft high schools. His courses ranged from earth science and life science to biology, chemistry, and physics. He also served as an OEA and NEA delegate. A proud Ohio State supporter, Dennis worked many summers at the Ohio State Fair and later served as a Red Coat at the Schottenstein Center, assisting with sporting events, concerts, and Skull Sessions.

Dennis met his sweetheart, Sandra, at Tappan’s in Mansfield. They moved to Columbus in 1967 and shared 60 years of marriage. Together they enjoyed trips to New Orleans and the national parks, including a five-week journey out west. Dennis also loved bowling, gardening, and visits with Kimberly and Jeff’s seven German Shorthaired Pointer “grand dogs.”

Reflecting his lifelong commitment to education and his love for Sandra, Dennis established the Dennis and Sandra Beer Family Scholarship Fund at Ohio State in both their names.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra J. (Smith) Beer; his parents, Robert and Kathryn Beer; his sister Donna (Beer) Gabor; his brothers Delbert, Kenny, and Rex.

Dennis is survived by his daughter, Kimberly K. (Beer) Arnold, and her husband, Jeffrey; his brother, Alvin Beer; his sister, Kathy Stacy; sisters-in-law, Janet Smith and Barbara Lantz; brother-in-law, Michael Lantz; many nieces and nephews.
