Dolores Jane (Ward) Dalton, age 84, died peacefully at home in Charlotte, NC on January 20, 2017. Dolores was born on November 18, 1932 in Kanawha Falls, WV the daughter of Dudley N. Ward and Hattie M. (Dartt) Ward.
Dolores graduated from Gauley Bridge High School where she was a majorette for the marching band. She then attended Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) and became certified as a dental hygienist. In August of 1952, Dolores married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Joseph W. Dalton. They enjoyed sixty-one years of marriage and had five children.
In addition to raising their children and working as a dental hygienist early in her career, Dolores also worked as a pharmacy technician, after moving to Reynoldsburg, OH she worked and retired from Discover Card Services as a merchant investigator. Dolores enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening; she was a talented seamstress and also enjoyed ceramics, making floral arrangements, and painting.
Dolores was a loving and devoted wife and mother, an elegant and refined lady. She was a sweet and kind person to everyone, with a truly good and pure heart. She loved her family unconditionally and was wholly unselfish in everything she did. Dolores was a beautiful and wonderful person who was deeply loved by her family and friends and who will be deeply missed.
Dolores had been a member of several Catholic Churches in her lifetime. Saint Anthony Shrine in Boomer, WV, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Point Pleasant, WV, and St. Pius X Catholic Church in Reynoldsburg, OH. Dolores was an active volunteer in the church and with charitable organizations such as St. Vincent de Paul Society, as well as Matthew: 23, a group who provides meals and luncheons for the sick and for families of the deceased.
Dolores is preceded in death by her parents: Hattie M. Ward and Dudley N. Ward,
husband: Joseph W. Dalton, brothers: Dudley L. Ward, Kenneth Ward, and Eric Haden Ward, daughter-in- law: Linda Dalton and son-in-law; Mark Lycan.
Dolores is survived by her five children, twelve grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
Children: Shirley Lycan of Scott Depot, WV, Michael Dalton (Jenny) of Bidwell, OH, Mary Schmidt (Jim) of Panama City Beach, FL, Donna Mitchell of Lancaster, OH and Patricia Viers (Bill) of Charlotte, NC.
Grandchildren: Heather Lycan Pilcher of Scott Depot, WV, Melissa Lycan Haggai (John) of Glenn Allen, VA, Ivy Oneal (Scott) of Lancaster, OH, Joshua Cotton (Kandi) of Franklin, TN, Joseph M. Dalton (Shannon) of Reynoldsburg, OH, Jacob Mitchell (Selina) of Bidwell, OH, Michael Schmidt (Katlen) of Spring Hill, TN, Jessica Mitchell Zeigler of Lancaster, OH, Amanda Schmidt of Panama City Beach, FL, Ashley Viers of Charlotte, NC, Brandon Viers of Charlotte, NC, and Emmie Viers of Charlotte, NC.
Great Grandchildren: Hannah, Summer, Hattie, Emma, Anna, Kendal, Jillian, Julia, Tyler, Georgia, Nolan, Jason, Ryan, Jordan, Alayna, McKinsey, Chloe, Grayson, Everly, Lilliana. Great-Great Grandchildren: Jaxon and Reese
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 27 from 5:00-8:00pm at
Schoedinger Funeral Home located at 5360 E. Livingston Ave. Columbus, OH 43232.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January, 28 at 10:00am at
St. Pius X Church, 1061 Waggoner Rd. Reynoldsburg, OH 43068.
A graveside service will follow mass immediately at
Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 11539 National Rd SW. Pataskala, OH 43062.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 197 E Gay St, Columbus, OH 43215 or online donations may be made at
SVDP Donations help provide direct assistance to the poor in
local communities throughout the United States. Vincentians
meet face to face with the poor to assess their needs. Some
of the needs addressed by Vincentians include: housing and
utility assistance; job training and placement; and access to
food, clothing, transportation and medical care.
The National Council also makes grants to the local
Conferences/Councils through its Domestic Disaster Relief
Grants and the Friends of the Poor Grant Programs.
