Donald Eugene Lozier

Beloved Donald Eugene Lozier departed his earthly home in Upper Arlington on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Don was born at home in Canton, Ohio on Sunday July 18, 1926, the second child of Walter and Delphia Lozier. He graduated from Lincoln High School and Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

Prior to Don’s graduation he became eligible for the WWII draft and enlisted in the US Navy. Don’s parents attended High School graduation and accepted his diploma in his absence. Don served as a Hospital Corpsman in charge of surgery with dates of service between 1945 – 1952. He served on the USS Lexington (CV16) aircraft carrier in the Pacific and the USS Timbalier (AVP54) seaplane tender in the Atlantic. He considered military service to be a privilege and valuable learning opportunity.

Later Don participated in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Additionally, he deeply appreciated invitations to middle school veteran’s events and looked forward to speaking with students about his experiences.

Don married Louise Hubbell (deceased 2000) on October 24, 1952. They purchased their home in River Ridge when the neighborhood was just being developed. There they raised two children, Claudia and Steven.

Don was very active over the course of his lifetime. In early years he enjoyed playing in the brass section of the Lincoln High School band. He was active in Drum and Bugle Corp and played in many competitions. His early work experiences included being a paperboy, working at the Canton downtown bakery, farm work, Canton City Park Service, Hotel Night Auditor and factory work at Bucyrus Blades.

Don taught science and math at Marengo High School for a year before moving to Columbus for a career at Battelle Memorial Institute which lasted for over 39 years. In 1991 he retired from his role as Nuclear Quality Assurance Manager of Decontamination and Decommissioning Operations. During his years he regularly donated blood through the American Red Cross and was a Multi-Gallon Donor.

He enjoyed camping and travel all over the United States, playing softball, tennis and later golf. He never missed an opportunity to attend his grandsons’ sporting events and enjoyed attending Columbus Jets and Clippers games.

A source of pride for Don centered on maintaining a healthy diet and active life. Home repair projects and yard care were daily routines. He maintained that almost anything could be fixed with the correct tools and right parts. A sign in his home read “Grandpas are for loving and fixing things”.

Don married June Watters (deceased 2021) on October 29, 2005. They enjoyed being together, travel and long drives through Ohio country side. Both were active in the church and cherished many friendships at the Upper Arlington Senior Center.

Faithful attendance to Sunday church services began when he was a child starting at First Christian Church in Canton, Ohio. He attended Sunday services while aboard ships in the Navy and treasured the little blue Bible issued to him. Don was a Charter Member of Northwest Christian Church and served in many roles over time including Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, Property Stewards and Youth leader. He enjoyed serving as a chaperone on several youth mission trips. It was very important to Don to faithfully welcome and greet everyone on Sundays at the church door with a friendly smile, handshake or hug.

Don treasured the companionship of many dogs throughout his life time. He was rarely without a special four-legged friend. Bubbles, Homer (USS Lexington), Candy, Holly, Muffy, Bonnie, Cinder, Chief and Milo each brought him tremendous joy.

Don is survived by his daughter Claudia Lozier, and son, Steven Lozier; grandchildren Nicholas Smith and wife Rachel; Benjamin Smith and wife Jessica; and Emily Nichols; great grandchildren Mason, Cameron Donald, William, Kaelyn and Lathyn.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Louise and June; sister Kathleen Frost; brother-in- law Jack Frost; and nephew Jeffrey Frost.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Northwest Christian Church.
