Dorothy Jackman Butz, age 90, died peacefully on October 17, 2020 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Born April 2, 1930 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Rev. Dr. J. Earl Jackman and Anna (Mintier) Jackman. She grew up in Leonia, New Jersey and graduated from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio in 1952. Dorothy was the wife of Rev. Robert J. Butz, pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbus, for 33 years. In her roles as church member and minister's wife, she actively contributed to the Church throughout her life. Her faith was essential to her, most recently as a member at First Presbyterian Church of Westerville, Ohio. She served as assistant librarian at Bexley High School and taught piano lessons for many years. Upon her death, she resided at Feridean Commons, Westerville.
Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing the piano and knitting, often donating her work to charitable causes. She was famous among her children and grandchildren for her reliable stash of York peppermint patties and the candy cane cookies and scalloped oysters she made for holiday gatherings. She was considered an amazing cook, preparing meals for her family of 7. Her children also remember the camping trips they took when young, for which she prepared diversionary family activities and outfitted all camping and family supplies for packing into one car. Her sense of humor and patience with her husband's and children's pranks are legendary.
Mrs. Butz was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister Florence Shafer (Kenneth). She is survived by a sister Lois Howland (Donald), Worcester, Pennsylvania; her five children, Sharon Cowen (Lawrence), Bedford, New Hampshire; Bryan Butz (Sue), Westerville, Ohio; Carol Chambers (Nathan), Greenwood Village, Colorado; David Butz (Heidi), Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Steven Butz (Sharon), Carmel, Indiana. She is also survived by 12 beloved grandchildren: Lora (Brian Carpenter), Alex (Kristin), Kaitlyn (Allan Broskowitz), Jack, Evan, Kelsey, Julia, Erica, Claire, Emily, Charles and Joey; 3 great-grandchildren: Connor, Braden and Matilda; and a niece and 6 nephews. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Heifer International, www.heifer.org , a charity Rev. and Mrs. Butz supported for many years.
Services have been entrusted to SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON FUNERAL HOME. A private graveside service for the family will be officiated by Rev. Mark Gauen, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Westerville. A larger memorial service will be held after the pandemic.
