Dorothy was one of a kind. Her and her daughter, Lynne were like family to me. I grew up just over the street from her when I was in school. I would walk home and Dorothy and Lynne were always on the front porch with open arms. Lynne would take me on shopping trips and blockbuster visits to get new movies for her movie collection.

Having the education field in their blood, they taught me so many things along my life path. It wasn't until I was a senior in high school, that I realized what my intended career path was supposed to be. Lynne and Dorothy instilled a love of learning in me and taught me to accept anyone and everyone. Once Lynne had passed, I felt that she still had a light that shined down onto me and Dorothy reminded me of that light every single time I visited her.  I can still remember her words the last time I saw her, "Lynne would be so proud, I cannot wait to tell her. Although I know she already knows about your amazing achievements as an educator."

Wonderful lady, wonderful neighbor. 

I used to sit on her porch at night with my youngest baby, who liked to cry indoors and was peacefully happy when I would carry him outdoors, or sit on a neighbor's porch! 

She kept a wonderful treasure box filled with little things for kids. Every now and then she'd invite one of my children in and let them choose something from the treasure box!  I'm not sure they'd let people do something like that today; but it was right for her and for my children.

Oh and her smile! She'd lit up our neighborhood for years, and after she moved away, she'd light up the neighborhood again whenever she returned for a visit or to attend the parade. 

When she moved out she gave me her husband's old ladder; whenever I use it I say a prayer for him. I guess now I'll say prayers for both of them. 

While we were neighbors, I was the guy in the neighborhood with the snowblower. I would take care of several neighbors' walks and drives. My wife would worry that  my machine had made too much noise, too early in the morning, but then Mrs. Sears would bring over a plate of cookies and thank my wife for sending me over to clear her snow, so there was no trouble after all.

I remember one time the poor dear was horrified! She had a gorgeous tall old tree in her yard, and once when she was on vacation a terrible storm came and knocked that tree right into our dining room! No one was hurt; the windows were broken but otherwise no harm, no foul. I'm not sure how she learned of the event, but I think she called her insurance agent even before calling us, and she called us promptly, but someone came and cleared out the tree, and replaced the windows, and cleaned up the mess all so promptly. That's all she had to do and immediately we were square, but still she felt so unnecessarily terrible and apologetic, the way people don't seem to get any more. 

And now I learn she was a hundred years old! Well, God bless her soul and give her eternal rest. She certainly made the world a nicer place!
