

Dorothy L. Shields, age 87, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2010 at Summits Trace Nursing Home. Dorothy was born on September 11, 1922 in Imlaystown, NJ to the late Pennington and Bessie Mae Patterson. She is also preceded in death by her dear sister, Violet Dehm. Following her high school graduation at Asbury High School she entered the work force as a bookkeeper and secretary. In 1953 she married her late husband, Joseph G. Shields. She is survived by her son, Patrick (Patricia) Shields and loving grandchildren, Mike and Kathy (fiancé, Matt Smith). Dorothy had a strong faith in the Catholic Church attending St. Matthew the Apostle till her move to Summits Trace where she started fellowship at St. Thomas. She enjoyed bowling and was in several leagues with her husband. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, cards and dining out. She always had a smile on her face and the most positive attitude. Family will receive friends on Thursday, January 21, 2010 from 5-7pm at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 East Johnstown Road, Gahanna, Ohio 43230. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday, January 22, 2010 at 10:30am at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2692 E. Fifth Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43219. Father Denis S. Kigozi celebrant. Interment to follow on Monday, January 25, 2010 at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch, NJ. Contributions can be made in Dorothy’s honor to Heartland Hospice, 6500 Busch Blvd # 210, Columbus, OH 43229. The family would like to thank all the staff at Heartland Hospice especially, Kim, Cheryl, Julie, Linda, John and Pastor Norman. They would also like to thank the many caregivers at Summits Trace for their decade of care including, Wayland, Kathy, John, Marie, Mark, Cindy, Heidi, Karen, Robin, Rhonte, Brenna, Shannon, Judy and Pastor Jim who became Dorothy’s extended family. A thank you to Father Denis and the visitation staff from St. Thomas for administering to her spiritual needs. And they would like to extend a very special thank you to her roommate, Doris for her care, support and friendship while at Summits Trace.
