Dorothy L Simmons

Dorothy received all her formal education from several schools in Portsmouth, Ohio. After graduating high school, she relocated to New York City in 1960, and began a career in the commercial insurance industry. It was also in New York that she would meet and marry William "Billy" Simmons.

Over their 49 years together, they called many places home. They had residences in Bronx, New York; Lenexa, Kansas; Blue Springs, Missouri; Bermuda; Toledo, Ohio; Sun Lakes, Arizona; and finally, Columbus, Ohio. A woman rooted strongly in her faith, she was an active member at several AME churches throughout her journey.

Dorothy is survived by her husband William R.B. Simmons; two sisters, Diane Williams and Jackie Patterson; one brother Jerry Lone; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; one child Todd M. Simmons; and one grandson Elijah J. Simmons. She was preceded in death not only by her parents Parker and Hattie, but also siblings Mary, Tommy, Floyd, Earl and David.

Family will receive friends on Friday February 2, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna, Ohio 43230. A Funeral Service will be held, on Saturday February 3, 2018 at 10am at Mt. Vernon Ave AME Church, 1127 Mt Vernon Ave, Columbus, OH 43203, followed by a celebration at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel.
