A graduate of Upper Arlington High School, Doug went on to earn a degree in Economics and Marketing from Ohio State University in 1957 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. That same year he married the love of his life, Judith Edwards Sandbo, and together they created many wonderful memories in their 68 years as inseparable partners.
Doug was a skilled business leader and a constant driving force as the CEO of the OG Sandbo Company, which he built into a highly regarded food brokerage firm. Known for his leadership and integrity, Doug’s business accomplishments were matched by his civic commitment in serving as president of the Upper Arlington Civic Association and as a charter member and president of the Upper Arlington Rotary Club.
Doug’s adventurous spirit was most alive on the water. A pioneering water skier on the Scioto River, he began with homemade skis behind his 14ft boat with a 10hp engine. Over his lifetime, Doug owned 11 boats (each named “The Sandboat”) which he used to explore the waters of the Great Lakes, Florida, and British Columbia.
Doug and Judy spent winters in Boca Grande, FL which truly became their second home. While there, they developed wonderful friendships and were involved in many aspects of the Boca Grande community.
While skilled in many areas, Doug’s true gift was his ability to connect with people. Conversations with Doug were rarely about him - they were about you. Nowhere was that more evident than in his relationships with his eight grandchildren. His intuition and empathy helped others see the best in themselves, a wonderful legacy that will live on with the many who knew him.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents Olaf and Marjorie Sandbo and his sister Joyce Shisler.
He is survived by his wife Judith Sandbo, his children Steve Sandbo (Jill), Scott Sandbo (Betsy) and Sharon Hayes (Dana); his grandchildren Stephen Sandbo, Brooke Ettenger, Drew Sandbo, Elizabeth Sandbo, John Sandbo, Dana Hayes III, Peter Hayes, Sarah Hayes and his six great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7pm on Monday July 7th at Schoedinger Northwest. A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, July 8th at Trinity United Methodist Church on Fifth Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Upper Arlington Rotary Foundation or the charity of your choice.
Doug Sandbo lived a life of service, adventure and deep personal connection. He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished but for how he made others feel.
