Dwain David Sutphin, of Groveport, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully in his home on Tuesday, Sept 17th, 2024. He was born on June 5th, 1948 in Radford, Virginia, to William David and Pauline Sutphin. He was a beloved member of the congregation at Redeemer’s Church on Courtright Rd for 52 years. He served proudly on the USS Belknap in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. While on the Belknap he eventually became the ship barber, a skill he would continue to utilize for decades as he cut the hair of countless friends and loved ones. During his life he worked at Horton Ambulance, Frisbee Electric, and later at Sutphen Corporation for 40 years, where he performed electrical wiring on firetrucks, and eventually became a gold leaf letterer at the company. Over a period of several decades, Dwain’s exceptional artistic talent, skills and craftsmanship were used to apply gold, silver and copper leaf within his hand-painted striping, lettering and emblems on the exterior of firetrucks for fire companies all around the United States. A life-long fan of the Green Bay Packers, Dwain also loved studying about giant trees around the world, collecting pocketknives, carving and creating hand-made fishing lures, carving one of a kind canes and walking sticks, drawing and painting a variety of nature scenes, and sharing a wealth of “dad jokes” far and wide. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and provider for his family that he loved deeply.
He is survived by his wife of 53 and a half years, Connie S. Sutphin; daughter, Jennifer (Dennis) Wolfe, Pickerington; son, Joseph (Gina) Sutphin, Carroll; grandchildren, Jacob (Crysta) Wolfe, Canal Winchester, Jordan (Emily) Wolfe, Pickerington, Bethany (Torree) Brooks, Groveport, Ciarra Sutphin, Columbus, Seth Haynes (Ashley Neal), Delaware; great-grandson, Elijah Wolfe and his soon-to-be born great-granddaughter.
An afternoon memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept 27th, at 2pm at Redeemer’s Church at 1850 Courtright Rd. Columbus, OH 43227. Interment to follow at Lancaster Cemetery.
