Ed King was born on September 4, 1936, in Beijing, China. During his early years, he lived in Shanghai, where he spent many hours with his beloved grandmother. His family then fled communist rule by relocating to Taiwan, where he graduated from The Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University in 1955.
Ed received his B.S. in chemistry from Chung Yuan Christian College of Science and Engineering in 1960. After completing his required military service, he worked for several years at the CPC Corporation, Taiwan’s state-owned oil and gas company, before leaving Taiwan to pursue graduate studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Queen’s University in 1971. After obtaining his doctoral degree, he joined the editorial staff at the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in Columbus, Ohio, where he remained until his retirement in 2020.
Ed was involved in many organizations, including the American Chemical Society, where he was a longtime member of the Committee on International Activities; and the Friends of WOSU, where he served as Board President from 1997-99. His true passion was classical music, which he pursued by serving as the Program Chair for the Columbus Chamber Music Society (now Chamber Music Columbus) for 30 years, from 1988 to 2018.
Ed is remembered by family and friends as sociable and deeply kind, with a ready “thank you” in response to gestures large and small. On nice days he could often be found taking nature walks, birdwatching, and exercising his amateur photography skills on birds and flowers of all types. He is survived by his daughters, Tracy King and Jennie King; his sons-in-law, Christian Meyer and Gordon Hughes; his three grandchildren, Justin Meyer, Natalie Meyer, and Oscar Hughes; and his longtime partner, Theresa Huston. He is also survived by his siblings, Godwin King and Kathy King; his wife, Lucy King; and his nephews Harvey King and Paul King.
A reception for family and friends will be held from 1–3 PM on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in his memory to Chamber Music Columbus; information for making donations either online or by mail can be found at https://www.chambermusiccolumbus.org/make-a-gift/
