Born on February 21, 1948, in Newberry, MI, Eileen was a teen when she moved to Parkersburg, WV, her residence for over 20 years.
Few people are able to earn a living doing what they were called to do. Eileen was one of those fortunate few. She was born to teach. At her core, she loved nothing more than pouring into her students. After graduating from Glenville State University, Eileen began her teaching career in Parkersburg at Edison Junior High School. After moving to Columbus, she taught in Columbus City Schools for three decades.
While she taught at multiple schools, Crestview Middle and Champion Middle Schools were where she felt the deepest connections and established relationships with both students and teachers that lasted for years. Ms. B., as her students called her, was both strict and loving in the classroom. She was known not just for her tough love, but how she cared for her students. Whether it was having difficult discussions or sharing her lunch, her students (she referred to them as her “kids”) knew she was a safe space for them.
While teaching was her passion, her family was her heart. She was a devoted mother to her children, Chris and Malika. The three were peas in one pod. Eileen loved her children fiercely. She was their best friend, confidante, and role model.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Raymond Lowe; her son, Christopher; brothers and sisters Carol Gavin, Joel Adams, Gail Mitchell, Richard Adams, Florence Simmons, Toni Latham; and stepson Adrian Barber.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Malika; brother Frank (Bobbie) Adams of Grand Rapids, MI, sister Helen of Parkersburg, WV; stepchildren Angela Barber, Lamont Barber, Garrick Barber of Columbus, OH; godsons Ryan and Max Barber of Columbus, OH; and friend/colleague/chosen daughter Marla Miragliotta. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family thanks Riverside Methodist Hospital, especially the Intensive Care Unit and the OhioHealth Hospice House. Eileen received incredible care while at Riverside. The OhioHealth Hospice House served as a place of warmth and tranquility for both Eileen and her family.
Known for her generosity, Eileen gave to both those around her and organizations close to her heart such as Faith Mission. She would be honored if you considered making a donation to Faith Mission at https://lssnetworkofhope.org/donate/.
Eileen will be interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta, OH. The family will host a celebration of Eileen’s life later this summer.
