I had the honor of interviewing and hiring Elton Hall.  Elton was warm and had the energy of a teenager.  Many of our customers would come into the store to see Elton and have him escort the customers to their product.  A short time after hiring Elton I had the pleasure to meet his family.  I will never forget the day that Elton and I talked about friendship.  The comment that Elton made to me will forever be embedded in my heart.  Elton said " You are a friend that I wish I had met along time ago"  he said this as if we were friends forever.  I think of Elton with the smile, energy and enthusiasm to work, and make others feel good.  This week I was to bring my son to say Thank you for the kind gift.  Elton my boys say "THANK YOU" and I know you will receive this.  My friend I will see you later.

I met Mr. Hall and Brutus Buckeye the same night. Jo and I had been invited to a reception before a woman's basketball game, and she brought her dad. I enjoyed talking with him, especially since both of us are Buckeye fans. What a fun time!

I was folding clothes with Janine tonight,  getting ready to leave for Columbus tomorrow mornning.  I was thinking, I wonder what Elton will be preparing tonight  for tomorrow (and why was I thinking that? ... I guess because I was thinking of him), when I realized almost instantaneously that we were leaving tomorrow to say goodbye to Elton and that he wouldn't be having to prepare anything.  But that is how I thought of my Dad also; sometimes, in the present..  And that is the strength of our parents.  They are always there for us, even in their passing and in the simple things that we do.  Hey Elton, say goodbye to Doug for me.

Dad had a smile that could light up a room, a hearty laugh too.  He had a great sense of humor that was with him to the end.  He loved a good joke and a witty comment.  

He could play the ukulele and could always play most of “Claire de Lune” on the piano.   He had some goofy songs in his repertoire too; and, when we were little, would always get us dancing. 

He loved his family and was proud of his five daughters and his grandchildren.  His first question was always “How are you?” and, he truly wanted to know.  This gentle giant will be greatly missed.

Being the father of five daughters Dad really enjoyed once we all started getting married.  That gave him men to hang out with.  Then it was even greater because his first two grandchildren were boys.  Again, more males in the family.  

Dad loved sports.  On a couple of occasions Bob and I took him and Mother to Miami University football games.  These were front row, 50 yard line seats, so he was right in the middle of the action.  He had a great time and watched every minute.  Mother would usually get bored, so she and I would walk around the stadium.  Dad got to sit through the entire game with Bob and all the other Miami Redskins fans.  He had the best time.   

I think of that moment last week when he moved from this life on Earth to his heavenly life with the Lord.  I know we will all see him again some day when we make that journey also.

I am so sorry for your loss. I haven't seen any of you for so long but all of you pop into my mind frequently. Now you are paramount in my thoughts and prayers and I know you are comforted by the fact that your husband/father/friend is in the arms of Jesus.

After my dad lost the majority of his sight, I would sit with him and we would pay his bills together.  His job was to put everything in the envelope, seal it, and put a stamp/return address labels on it.  We would talk about everything (and nothing)while we were doing this.  One conversation we had was after I had hurt my knee, and found out I had arthritis in both knees.  Walking was suddenly painful.  He told me that throughout our lives, we had to find a "new normal" on which to base everything else.  I knew that he was talking about more than just my knee, with all that had happened to him in the past year.

I've thought about this "new normal" conversation many times since then.  Everytime his health declined, I tried to find this new normal and continue on with my life and caring for him.  We are now facing another "new normal" without his physical presence but his words and quiet actions will continue in our memories.  I miss him terribly.  Beth

I know Elton Hall only through his talented and kind daughters, Jo and Janine. Jo I have met briefly; Janine I have known for decades. Jo's photos of my home are among my favorites. Janine's wise counsel and incredible listening skills have helped me steer through many tumultuous passages. In the South the saying, " The apple does not fall far from the tree." fits here. Elton must have been an incredible individual to have produced such exemplary women.

I was talking to my sister Jenny on my way home from making funeral arrangements on Friday and I got stopped at a train crossing. Just as the engine was in front of me it blew it's whistle (they usually start earlier for warning) and my CD player kicked on. I had been listening to Daddy's favorite CD this a.m., but could not have gotten past the 3rd or 4th track. When the CD player kicked on - it was on track #10, Ernie Haase’s Get Away, Jordan.

This past weekend while in the hospital, Daddy struggled to find the word "platform" and wondered how we get the schedule. I told him I did not know, but it reminded me of what he wrote to all of us in 2006:

"Mother remembers things from her childhood a lot better than I do, but one of the memories that stands out is how excited I was when, at 6 or 7 years old, I was standing on the platform of the railroad station waiting for my first train ride. I don't remember where we were going but I remember the feeling of wonder over what the ride would be like, what we would see on the way, and what it would be like when we got there. When I think of Paul's words - to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord - I get a similar feeling of wonder over what that trip will be like. So when the time is right for Him, that's the right time for me, and I am totally comfortable with that."

So I am sure Daddy was telling me he had gotten on His train - and right on time!
