

Emily Hill Watkins Carruthers, age 97, of Columbus, died December 10, 2013. She was born September 16, 1916 in Greensboro, NC to the late Champe Redd Penn and Samuel Ashton Watkins and grew up in Petersburg and Richmond, VA.
She attended Cornell University and the University of Virginia, School of Hospital Administration. She worked for Eastern Airlines and the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
She was a member of the Independent Presbyterian Church and a volunteer receptionist.
She was a founding member of The Canterbury Club in Mountain Brook, AL. As a teenager, she volunteered at The Cripple Children's Home, Richmond, VA and later other children's hospitals where ever she lived.
She loved to travel with family members including to Asia during the Viet Nam war for her son Bill's birthday while he served there as an Air Force pilot. She celebrated her 90th birthday party at Ragland Castle in Ragland Wales with family.
Devoted mother and friend she will be remembered for always being there for family especially when facing illnesses.
In addition to her parents, Muzze was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Carruthers; daughter Kathryn Spencer C. Maness; 3 brothers and 4 sisters. Muzze will be missed by her loving children, William Benjamin Carruthers, Jr. (Christine), Charlotte, NC, Susan C. Fromkes (John) Columbus, Ohio; 6 grandchildren, Emily Hill Maness Johnson (Lou) Atlanta, GA, Penn Maness, Atlanta, John Penn Fromkes (Becky) Columbus, Ohio, Kathryn Spencer Fromkes Moothart (Shaun), Newport Beach, CA, William Benjamin Carruthers, III (Dan), Raleigh, NC, and Charles Wright Carruthers, Charlotte, NC; 2 Great grand children, Caleb Johnson and Carter Penn Fromkes; sisters, Champe Penn Watkins Armstrong, Asheville, NC, Lindsay Watkins Hayes (Thomas), Charlotte, NC, and Barbara Blanton Richmond, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27th, 2013 at Trillium Place, 3500 Trillium Crossing, Columbus Ohio. Family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. and following the service.
Inurnment at the columbarium at Independent Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, AL January 16, 2014 Service at 11:00am with visitation following.
