Eugene Hammond

At the age of 17 he sought an opportunity to see the world by joining the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force and stationed at Upper Heyford, England. He met his wife of 66 years, Sylvia Hammond. They were blessed with five children, Eugene Mark Hammond, Paul Christopher Hammond, Karen Sylvia Thomas, Vicky Jean Pate, and Lisa Marie Hamlet.

Eugene enjoyed all aspects of being a Firefighter while being in the Air Force for Twenty years. However, retirement at the age of 38 years old wasn’t an option with five kids to feed. He began his second career with The Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections as a Correctional Officer. This career lasted for fifteen years. He then began his last and most important career as Papa. He was the chauffeur for many of the grandkids taking them to and from school each day, making sure to stop at the fast-food restaurant of their choice. For others he ensured they had a full belly while teaching them to fish. We must also give him credit for being the family “Dentist” pulling all the loose teeth of kids and grandkids. His favorite gift for all occasions was Lottery tickets because he was convinced, he was going to be the next millionaire. More than lottery tickets he loved vacationing, it didn’t matter if it was Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach, Pensacola Florida, NYC, or Georgia as long as he was with family and could cast a line (fishing line) he was happy. Family Reunions, an opportunity for him to catch up with all his kin folk was near and dear to his heart.

Eugene is preceded in death by son, Eugene (Tazz) Hammond. Siblings: Benjamin, Clarance Sr, Jethro, Charlie Sr, A.D.Jr, Thomas, and Zaretta Hammond. Florence Berry, Vernell Readus, Georgiana Lyons-Tarver, and Ida Ruth Brown

Left to cherish his memories are wife, Sylvia Hammond, children: Paul (Jill) Hammond, Karen Thomas, Vicky Pate, Lisa Hamlet. Brother: Carlisle (Mary) Hammond. Son-in-laws: Mark Thomas, Terry Pate, Darnel Hamlet. Grandchildren: Stacy Thomas, Mark (Tia) Thomas, Tamikka Pate, Alex (Jessica) Scott, Tiaira (Derrick) Wilson, Tasha Snedeker, Tahlia (Sierra) Pate, Dareyl(Brianna) Hamlet, Destiny (Justice) Loveless, Angel Loveless, McKenzie Loveless, Tyron(Nia) Woods, Jessica Hammond, Ashley Hammond, Alissa Hammond. Great grandchildren: Donte (Grace) Haley, Jordan Haley, Kaden (Mia) Haley, Kameron Haley, Marquan Thomas, Malanna Thomas, Mia Tyree, Malia Thomas, Jaiyah Tatum, Tre Tatum, Tyaire Woods, Marlow Pate, Tyson Ellison, Londyn Sunderland, Nicholas Scott, Emily Scott, Bella Snedeker, Kylan Snedeker, Great Great granddaughter: Na’moni Haley; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Schoedinger Funeral Home 5360 E Livingston Ave, Columbus, Ohio 43232 on June 1st ,2026 from 12:00pm-1:00pm, followed by a funeral service.

Burial will be at Glen Rest Memorial Estate 8029 E. Main St, Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068
