

Genie was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1945. She moved to Central Ohio at an early age and attended the Upper Arlington schools and was a member of the Class of 1963 at Upper Arlington High School. She graduated from Morehead State University and became a teacher in two widely varying venues: rural Tennessee and Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She returned to Columbus and became an account executive at WCMH-TV and worked at the Ohio Arts Council. She began a graphic design firm and created a magazine, Columbus Homes and Lifestyles. In 1996 she married Jay Hoster and together they opened Books on High in Clintonville, which later moved to Grandview. Boomer the bookstore cat was a valuable associate. Genie was a founding member of the Columbus Historical Society and the Aldus Society and held many positions in both organizations. (The photo shows her presiding at a meeting as Aldus president.) She was writing a history of bookselling in Columbus from its pioneer roots to the present day. Genie loved local history, old books, and good friends.
