Filomena (Phyllis) Monaco, 102, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, under the outstanding, compassionate care received at Kobacker (OhioHealth Hospice House). She was born on October 18, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her father Giovanni Santucci, brother Edward Santucci and beloved husband Henry (Heinie) Monaco. She was the last of her generation.
She is survived by twin daughters: Anna Monaco Rose (Dana) and Rema (Richard) King
Raised in Milo-Grogan neighborhood where she grew up with many life-long friends.
She was a Graduate of Sacred Heart Commercial School with a business/secretarial background. Early on, she worked at the Draft Board during WW II where she helped enlist many of her friends. Then at Jack Wood’s Plumbing. Later as a secretary with the OSU College of Agriculture, and lastly at the Bursar office of CTI (now Columbus State). She was a homemaker extraordinaire: making homemade pasta, pizza and cookies while keeping a fastidious house. She loved to dance and we all acclaimed her with the title of the “Dancing Queen”. In her early years she danced as her brother’s partner and at the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) dances. We need to acknowledge our caregiver team who helped us give 24/7 personal care in the last seven years of her life. And thanks to her special lifelong doctor and friend, Dr. MaryJo Welker, OSU Family Practice. She was always there to help a friend/family/neighbor in need.
She will be missed for her kindness, positive attitude, and compassion. In her later years, she was an expert card player: euchre and her favorite “kings around the corner” game.
We sadly bid her farewell with the words to her favorite song by Andrea Bocelli: “Con te partiro” (“Time to Say Goodbye”)
