

born June 23, 1917 in Columbus Ohio, the daughter of Charles and Jennie Goodwin. She was
a long time resident of Upper Arlington and was married there in 1941 to Philip Gustafson.
They were married for 52 years before his death in August, 1992.
Renowned for her boundless energy and positive, can do attitude, Tanny lived a very full and
gracious life during which she met seven U.S. presidents, entertained troops in World War II,
raised a happy family and stayed active in the community.
Tanny graduated from Ohio State University where she was on the homecoming court and was
Makio yearbook queen and Jr. Prom queen, the latter position as the personal selection of
bandleader Tommy Dorsey. She was a life member of the OSU President's Club, a member of
Kappa Kappa Gamma and represented Ohio State at the 1939 World's Fair in New York.
In New York City she was personally recruited by John Robert Powers for his modeling agency
and appeared in many national magazines including Life, Colliers, Vogue and The Saturday
Evening Post. During World War II her portrait was painted by celebrated artists Bradshaw
Crandall and McClelland Barclay for Army and Navy illustrations. She starred in a movie for
Otis Barton in Nassau, Bahamas, featuring deep sea diving. Tanny did her own diving stunts.
She played briefly for a women's professional basketball team in Brooklyn, NY.
Tanny was a world traveler, visiting all the major countries of the world with over 20 trips to
Europe alone. She often traveled with family on cruises and escorted expeditions. She
enjoyed bridge, tennis, and genealogy. She was a descendent of Abraham Clark, a signer of
the Declaration of Independence and Ozias Goodwin, a founder of Hartford, Connecticut. She
belonged to the Nesbitt and Curtis genealogical societies.
She was treasurer of the first Decorators' Show House and treasurer of the Women's Board at
the Columbus Museum of Art. She was past chairman of Childhood League Board III and a
founding member of Group Y of First Community Church, where she was a member for over 75
years.
Tanny was a member of Scioto Country Club and past member of the Columbus Athletic Club,
on the Founding Board of Friends of the Upper Arlington Library and Chairman of the Board of
Hughes-Peters, Inc. She was past chair of the National Society of Colonel Dames of Ohio.
Tanny is survived by her daughter Jan Gunn and Jan's husband Keith Gunn of Orinda,
California. Also her son Richard Gustafson of Sebastopol, California and her granddaughter
Diana Matula and husband Matt Matula of Williams, Oregon. Also her step granddaughter
Elizabeth Miney and husband Brendan Miney and their children Claire and William Miney, all of Coatesville, PA. Also Tanny's sister Dorothy Freed of Lakeland, Florida plus many loving nieces and nephews and their families. Also Tanny's very dear friends.
A funeral service will be held at First Community Church on Friday September 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Union Cemetery. Calling hours will be in Brownlee Hall at FCC prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
