

Fred H. Smith, age 96, died on April 25, 2018. He was born on March 8, 1922 in Los Angeles, California and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army, with the 13th Armored Division, 153rd Armored Signal Company in Europe during World War II. He graduated from Washington University with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, and was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Honorary Society. He attained a M.S. degree from the Newark College of Engineering, where he taught for several years. He was employed by RCA in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Harrison, New Jersey, and then by Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York City and Columbus, Ohio, where he retired after 33 years of service. He was a resident of New Albany, Ohio for 45 years. He served a term as Village Clerk-Treasurer, served for 15 years as an election official at the polls, and volunteered at the New Albany Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. He was also a leader in the Cub Scouts. He was a member of the Chuck Wheeler's Square Dance Club, the Party Line Contra Dance Club, the Silhouette Round Dance Club, Marianne Senecal's Carousel Group, and was also a member of the Worthington Civic Band. He served as President of the John D. Burlie Club of the Telecom Pioneers of America.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Virginia, known as Ginger. He is survived by his children: Barry (Carol) Smith of Winnsboro, SC, Diane (Richard) Deeter of Bristow, VA, Craig (Tomoko) Smith of Dublin, OH, Pamela (George) Daft of Baltimore, OH, and Amy (Richard) Blume of Worthington, OH; grandchildren, Monica (David) Shepard, Eric Smith, Cheryl (Brian) Merritt, Lisa Deeter (Tara Kafer), Miyoung Smith, John (Erica) Daft, Joseph (Kelli) Daft, Christopher Blume, and Jeffrey Blume; and great-grandchildren, Hunter Shepard, Logan Shepard, Tyler Merritt, Chase Merritt, Lauren Kafer-Deeter, William Daft, Henry Daft, and Charlotte Daft.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High Street, Worthington, Ohio. Interment will be a private family service at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
