Frederick J. Milford passed away Monday at the age of 93.
Fred was born on July 1, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Frederick and Florence Milford. He graduated from Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) with a degree in physics. He married Jean Olsen in 1951 and relocated to Boston where Fred earned a Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1952. After moving back to Cleveland, Fred taught physics at Case Western Reserve until 1959. In the same year, they moved to Columbus where Fred worked at Battelle Memorial Institute until his retirement as Vice President Special Programs in 1989.
During his time at Case, Fred volunteered and enlisted in the Navy and was accepted into the Eddie Program, now known as Electronics Technician. Fred was a standout recruit during his Navy schooling and was given orders to stay at Navy Pier in Chicago to teach other recruits during the war. He eventually worked his way up to Lt. Commander USNR.
Fred served on many boards and received many awards including George Eastman Fellow, Foche Scholar, Emeritus member advisory board of Central Ohio Salvation Army, Fellow American Physical Society, Board Member Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank. He was a Mason and member of the Kit Kat Club.
Fred was proceeded in death by his parents, Frederick and Florence Milford, and his wife of 51 years, Jean Milford. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Almonrode and son-in-law Richard Almonrode.
