

On December 19, 2019, Gayle Mattern passed away peacefully in her home in Gahanna, Ohio at age 69. Gayle was born on April 20, 1950 in Youngstown, Ohio to Robert and Anita Mattern. She was a 1968 graduate of The Rayen School and 1971 graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, earning her R.N. degree. From childhood on, Gayle always wanted to be a nurse and dedicated her life to her nursing career in Youngstown and Columbus, working until just a few months ago. After Gayle’s diagnosis of cancer 6 years ago, she handled each surgery, chemo, radiation treatments, and other medical procedures with complete grace, courage, and positive energy. Her deep faith in God helped her through all of life’s challenges. She loved the ocean and beaches, her beloved dachshunds, and spending time with family and friends. Gayle was known for her sense of humor, thoughtfulness, and her kind and compassionate spirit. Gayle was preceded in death by her mother, Anita, and her father, Bob. She is survived by her life partner of 37 wonderful years, Arline Dimitri; her sister, Nancy Mattern (Jan Pipic); Arline’s sister, Cindi Garrelts (Craig), Arline’s brother, Chris Dimitri, Arline’s nieces, several cousins and many friends. The family wishes to thank Mt. Carmel Hospice for their care. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, January 11 at the Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Road. Visitation will begin at 2pm and continue after the celebration with a catered reception with some of Gayle's favorite light hors d'oeuvres served. Reverend Jane Black officiating.
