

Gene Francis Simmons, age 91, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 8, 2026, with his beloved wife by his side. Gene was born on October 31, 1934, in Quimby, Iowa, to Claude M. and Mary Simmons. He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he was also employed with the Columbus, Ohio area facilities management group for many years. In addition, Gene had been self-employed, was exceptionally handy, and was known for his strong work ethic. Growing up, he worked diligently on the family farm. He always took great pride in his work while providing for his family. He faithfully served in many positions within the church including bishop, seminary teacher, priesthood leader, temple worker, and as a senior missionary along with his wife in the areas of Salt Lake City, Utah; Madrid, Spain and Columbus, Ohio, as well as being involved in many other church responsibilities. In his quieter moments, Gene found joy in watching football, gardening, solving puzzles, and playing games with family members. He especially treasured spending time with his family as well as serving and worshiping in the temple. His steady presence, generosity, and dedication to family and faith will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Wayne Simmons, Caroline Heuschen, and Phillip Simmons.
Gene is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Darlene Simmons; his children, Jeanne F. (Jeffery) Elder, Elizabeth Ciardelli, Thomas (Kelly) Simmons, Paul Simmons, T. Rose Simmons, Patrick (Michelle) Simmons, and Susan (Mark) Harrington; 26 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at Advantage Funeral Service by Schoedinger Hilltop, 3030 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, January 14th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3880 Gateway Blvd, Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Kingwood Memorial Park, Lewis Center, Ohio.
