Jerry was hit with diabetes in his twenties. What a shame at such an early point in life. But I’ve always admired how he accepted it and mastered the art of insulin back then before modern medicine afforded all the knowledge we now have on handling the disease. I know he had trouble adjusting. I know that Brenda saved him many times during emergencies. One time she was unable to revive him and called me in hopes he would respond to my voice. Luckily, he did. Yet he persevered and raised two sons, Matt and Jeff, despite the challenges. You have to be strong. I can only imagine. 

I suppose it was serendipity or a miracle that Jane and Jerry met. I don’t know the details of that encounter but I do know their marriage was a blessing as they helped each other through the years as difficulties arose.  I also know that like us, she will miss Jerry very much.

For Matt and Jeff I regret not having the opportunity to get to know you better. Just know that your dad was a special person whose teaching, coaching and mentoring helped so many students. We got along so well it was difficult to know whose puns were best! And we had a mind meld regarding America, national defense, individual  freedom, the Constitution, and the Second Amendment. You can be proud of your father!

Jerry Farber  -- Westerville, Ohio 1964

Jerry, Sarah and I met in 1964 at Otterbein College in Westerville. We shared the post-WWII good times when God, Family and Country were a priority. Jerry’s home was nearby in New Albany so I had plenty of opportunity to get to know Jerry quite well. For example, he drove an Oldsmobile 442 with the license—XWF—that stood for Extra Wonderful Farber!  
Jerry’s grandfather owned a milk delivery business.  I’m sure you’ve heard that barbers know all the neighborhood secrets but I learned that milkmen, back then, were the true masters of neighborhood secrets! I guess you learn a lot at every stop! Of course, Jerry helped Grandpa with the milk route even while in college so I tagged along one night for the experience. We picked up moo-products at a dairy somewhere deep in the bowels of Columbus then drove through the darkness in what seemed like insane circles while delivering special orders to customer’s insulated boxes on porches or even entering unlocked homes to put milk in their refrigerators! Truly great service but calculating the danger, I let Jerry do the honors.
Back at Otterbein it wasn’t all study. The bakery uptown was open all night while pastries were being created. The maple rolls were the absolute best! Just out of the oven around four in the morning. You could smell them a block away. Beautiful, beautiful works of art, warm with thick maple frosting running down the sides, melted in your mouth, with a heavenly scent!   One night after cramming for tests we had to have some caramel rolls to survive. Looking at those beauties laying there on the tray, tempting us with their beauty and aroma, we succumbed and bought six each of those beautiful babies. So tempting! So delicious! Unfortunately, I could only eat four, and then fell asleep. Even with the alarm set on top of the upside down waste basket to increase the noise, I slept through that test! Argh!
Sarah and I had many good times with Jerry at school. Back then freshman were required to wear beenies--no propeller on top--for the first couple of weeks culminating in a huge twenty foot high bonfire at night down by Alum Creek. Someone added an outhouse to the top of the bonfire and it was lit. Then the freshmen wearing beenies and red pajamas had to dance around the fire in a circle as the upperclassmen hazed them without mercy! Jerry looked cute wearing a beanie!
After college, we kept in touch. The first time was probably a year or two after school. I was stationed at Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota and Jerry, who at the time was working for a Honda dealer, decided he would make a weekend trip to see us. Well he drove straight through only stopping for gas and then sat on our couch vibrating for several hours until he was able to eat. He left the next morning and drove straight back to Westerville with a better understanding of motorcycling pleasures!

Sending my love and condolences to The Farber family during this difficult time. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Jerry was the first coach my boys had in middle school. He cared about his athletes as if they were his own children. He taught them more than just how to run, but also how to be good people. He gave them a life long love of the sport and they still run to this day at age 28 and 25. In fact my son Hunter has 3 half Ironman races under his belt. Jerry touched many lives and our family was fortunate to have known him. The world has lost a wonderful man. Love to you Jane.

Jane and family, I am so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing.  We have always loved Jerry and you also Jane.  Jerry's large smile will always be remembered, he was the life of the party and kept us in stitches.
