

Gerard Patrick McLaughlin, with family by his side, went to join his Lord, Friday January 5th, 2018. Born in Astoria, Queens, New York, March 7, 1929, he was the proud son of his parents, the late Patrick Joseph and Agnes Veronica Forkin McLaughlin. Gerard held close to his heart his faith and love of family and friends and the deep commitment to help whenever he could. He had a wonderful sense of humor, loved people and had a deep curiosity about their lives and journeys. His most happiness was watching his children and wonderful grandchildren grow and develop, making him a very proud and grateful man.
He was a graduate of St John's University in Jamaica, New York, receiving his Bachelor of Science and Masters in Bacteriology from St John's University Graduate School. He then attended the University of Louvain in Louvain, Belgium receiving his Doctorate in Medicine.
He completed his rotating internship at Bridgeport General Hospital, Bridgeport, Connecticut, followed by his Internal Medicine residency training at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York. He then completed a Psychiatric Residency at Creedmoor State Hospital in Middle Village, New York. He then served as a house physician in Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics at Kew Gardens Hospital in Kew Gardens, New York.
He was appointed Medical Director of Creedmoor State Hospital, Psychiatric and Medical Community Mental Health Program and served on the staff of Rockland State Hospital, Orangeburg, New York.
He then served as the Medical Director of the Hudson County, New Jersey, Meadowview Hospital located in Secaucus, New Jersey.
In 1978 he moved to East Liverpool, Ohio after many years of encouragement by his friend, Dr. Allan O'Brien, a former surgical resident at Bridgeport General Hospital to join him. He established his private medical practice in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry from April 1978 until his retirement in June 1997.
He loved his Irish heritage, history, politics, and traveling to see the marvels of architecture. He was fluent in French and found much solace in visiting the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, France several times and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland, known for the healing power to so many ill. In his later years, his joy was watching recorded tours of far and near places which brought him many wonderful memories of this world he loved.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Louise Lewit McLaughlin, of Dublin, Ohio, whom he married December 4, 1971 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Scarsdale, New York, daughter, Tracy Ann McLaughlin, Dublin, Ohio, and her daughters, Harper Quinn and Vivienne Louise, daughter, Patricia Agnes McLaughlin Castro, (Jose) Dublin, Ohio and their children, Colin Patrick, Brady Patrick, and Emerson Quinn, daughter, Tara Louise McLaughlin Tesoriero (John) Westport, CT and their children, Elle Mary, John Patrick, and Charlotte, and daughter Erin Siobhan McLaughlin Petrella, (Giovanni) New York, NY and their sons, Gerard Antonio and Guglielmo Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bernard Joseph and Kenneth Patrick. He also leaves his brother and sister-in-law Charles and Mary Ellen Lewit of Windsor, CT and his many nieces. He also leaves his sister-in-law Rosemarie Goephert McLaughlin of Brick, NJ and many nieces and nephews.
A Catholic Funeral Mass is planned at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Michael Church at 5750 North High St. Worthington, Ohio on January 10, 2018. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 N. High Street, Route 23 North, Lewis Center, Ohio.
Family and friends may call at the Schoedinger Funeral Home located at 6699 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio on January 9, 2018, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
