Gisela J. Hinkle, Ph.D.

Born June 13, 1926 in Konigsberg, East Prussia, German to the late Fritz Karl Mann and Ingeborg Papendieck. She was married to Roscoe C. Hinkle, Jr. Her education included an undergraduate degree from American University in Washington, D.C., her master’s degree in Sociology from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wisconsin.

She was an emeritus professor of sociology at The Ohio State University and retired from OSU in the 1990’s. One of her favorite activities was going to Grailville, a lay women’s Catholic organization, near Cincinnati, Ohio. She also thoroughly enjoyed hiking and nature observation in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and Seney National Wildlife Refuge. She was also a long-time supporter of environmental organizations, like Nature Conservancy, National Audubon Society, Natural Resources Defense Council and the Environmental Defense Fund.

Her favorite author was Angela Merkle, author of Freedom. And her favorite food was cottage cheese, she loved it!

She is survived by her children, Monica S. Baker, Brian D. (Maura) Hinkle and Kevin C. Hinkle; granddaughters Kelly G. and Jennifer M. Hinkle; and sister Dee Clement.

She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Karl Otto Mann and Dick “Dietrich” Mann, and her husband Roscoe C. Hinkle.

Family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM on Thursday, December 11th at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road in Upper Arlington where a Funeral Service will follow at 11:00am. Private interment will be held at Kingwood Memorial Park on U.S. Route 23, near Highbanks Metro Park.
