Gladys Leona Riecke, a pillar of strength and love, was born March 29, 1924, in Pettis County, Missouri. She was born at home to Elmer S. Christian and Pearl A. (Smith) Christian. Gladys was the oldest of four daughters, which included Marjorie Christian, Eunice Beeman (Donald), and Pauline Gehlken (Ernest), all of whom are now deceased. The family grew up on a farm, which instilled her with a strong work ethic, family values and an appreciation for the simple things in life. Gladys attended high school in Lincoln before enrolling in a secretarial school in Sedalia.
Shortly after completing her secretarial training, Gladys, at age 19, married Max W. Riecke October 30, 1943. Max was a carpenter. The couple had three children: Joyce D. Howe (John), Max E. (deceased), and Ray A. They lived in Windsor, Missouri, until 1953 when they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, during a construction boom.
Gladys worked for many years as a secretary for EG&G, a government defense contractor during World War II. After retiring from her secretarial position, she joined her husband in his new business with Shaklee, a sales company specializing in nutritional, beauty and household products. Gladys managed the business long after Max's passing in 1979. She sold the business in 1991 and moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be with her daughter, Joyce, where she has lived ever since.
She navigated life's challenges with courage and devotion. Gladys was a dedicated wife and mother, providing compassionate care for her husband Max during his battle with cancer, as well as for her two sons throughout their lifelong illnesses. Her Christian beliefs were a source of resilience for her. Her unwavering faith and compassion inspired those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and strength. She was blessed with five grandchildren: Dana (Kaori) Riecke, John (Margie) Howe, Jason (Kate) Howe, Troy (Doralicia) Riecke, and Joy (Michael) Weinberg. Additionally, she had ten great-grandchildren: Jason Perry, Augustus and Olivia Howe, Daniel and Samuel Riecke, Jesse Bauges and Edison Riecke, and Nara, Zephyr, and Ember Weinberg. All of whom will remember her as a guiding light in their lives. Gladys will also be missed by many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
