

A funeral service for Gordon L. Jones, 85 of Newark, will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 9:30 AM at Trinity AME Church, 76 E. Main St., Newark with Pastor Michael Menefield officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Licking County Veterans Alliance providing military honors.
Mr. Jones was born in Newark on January 26, 1926 to the late Chester and Virginia (Smith) Jones. He went to be with the Lord on December 13, 2011 at SharonBrooke assisted living facility in Newark, Ohio.
Mr. Jones proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard on convoy duty during WWII from September 9, 1943 to May 10, 1956. He worked as a supervisor with Ohio Power for 42 years. He was a lifetime member and officer of Trinity AME Church; member of American Legion Post #85; member and past master of Newark Masonic Lodge; and member of Ohio Power Veteran’s Association. Mr. Jones was dedicated to helping his church and others, and there was nothing that he could not fix. He enjoyed coaching baseball, playing golf, reading and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan, where he was known for his famous cheer, “Let’s Go D” from section 6A at the Shoe.
He is survived by his two sons, Brent L. (Gerri) Jones of Novi, MI and Gregory W. (Helen) Jones of Calabasas, CA; sister, Carol (Raymond) Berry of Newark; grandchildren, Brian, Trent, Derek and Corey; 7 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife in 1999, Mildred J. (Weaver) Jones, whom he married on July 7, 1946; brother, James Jones; and uncle, Norwood Smith.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Jones to the Carol Strawn Center, 126 W. Church Street, Newark, Ohio 43055.
Friends may call at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
