

BRUMFIELD, Gwen Brumfield, age 99, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She was born September 11, 1910 to the late Harry and Flossie (Lyne) Blair inColumbus. Preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Theodore Roosevelt (Ned) Brumfield of Wellston Ohio; sisters, Muriel Hanson, Helen Collier, Geraldine Brady, Virginia Shipley; brother, Robert Rex Blair; her special friend and companion, brother in law, John Shipley, and friend Henry Davidson. Gwen is survived by sister-in-law, Paula Blair; niece and family, whom she raised as daughter and grandchildren, Jeanine (Brady) Vaughn, her husband, Ken, and their children John Vaughn and Jennifer Eshelman; nieces and nephews, who brought her much joy as she followed their lives, Muriel’s children: Beverly and Gloria; Helen’s children: Linda, Michael, Cynthia, and Donald; Virginia’s children: Carol and Deborah; Rex’s children, Susan, Karen, and Rex; on Ned’s side: Kathryn, Iris, Jean, Linda, Ted, James and Lawrence; and her many friends and staff at Oakleaf Village where she resided for 22 years. Gwen graduated from West High School and The Ohio State University. She began her teaching career at a small school in northeastern Ohio before returning to Columbus where she lovingly taught for 38 years in the Columbus Public School System until retirement. She was a member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association and Ohio State University Alumni Association. “Gwened”, as she and her husband referred to themselves, were active in Jeffrey Manufacturing and C.O.P.S. camera clubs which brought them many friends and travels. Gwen was a member and attended King Avenue United Methodist Church from childhood to the present. Gwen enjoyed many of the activities at Oakleaf, gardening and was an avid OSU football and basketball fan. Reading was a favorite pastime and she appreciated the Columbus Public Library’s MetroMouse mobile program.
Gwen’s love of travel was fulfilled when she visited Europe 4 times in the 80’s. Rev John Keeny will officiate a memorial service to be held 2pm on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at King Avenue United Methodist Church, 299 King Ave., Columbus, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
