She was born to parents Mabel Lee Gant and James Preston Hughes on January 26, 1949 in Bronx, NY.
She graduated from Central High School in 1967 and went on to study Behavioral Science and Social Work at The Ohio State University graduating with a Bachelor's Degree.
Gwendolyn worked as a Lead Inspector with the Columbus Public Health Department. She retired after 27 years of service in 2018.
A woman of faith, her confidence was undeniable; a fearless phenomenal woman and extraordinary mother who left an impact on everyone she encountered. She was strong, proud, and not afraid of anyone or anything. She was an avid reader, philanthropist, activist, and a lover of roller skating in her prime. Gwen came from the school of hard knocks and did not believe in setbacks or excuses. She believed that nothing was impossible if you put your mind to whatever goal that you set for yourself in life.
"Mom" Gwen was an amazing storyteller as well. Especially when she referenced a book or movie It was so vivid and detailed, you felt like you were a part of it. She would give you just enough information to make you curious enough to find out the ending, And never one to be shy, she always gave great advice by telling it like it was, often…even if it rubbed you the wrong way at times. And nothing on this earth would warm your heart more than hearing her laughter in conversation or watching television.
Speaking for everyone… she was ONE OF A KIND!!!
"A strong woman is one who feels deeply and loves fiercely. Her tears flow as abundantly as her laughter. A strong woman is both soft and powerful. She is both practical and spiritual. A strong woman, in her essence, is a gift to the world." Ritu Ghatourey
