

Dr. Reverend Harold H. Zietlow, age 84, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Born October 17, 1926, in Marion, WI, he moved to Columbus to attend Capital University where he received a BA in Philosophy in 1947 before training for parish ministry at Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary (now Trinity Lutheran Seminary). He met Miriam Miller who was a student at Capital University and they married on June 25, 1950 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Blue Island, IL. He earned an MA in Philosophy in 1949 from The Ohio State University, a Master of Divinity in 1951, and a PhD in philosophy and theology in 1961 from the University of Chicago. He served as Professor of Theology at Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary (ELTS) from 1960-1978. In 1966-67 he studied philosophy at the University of Hamburg, Germany. He later went on to serve as a professor in the Pastoral Ministry and Mission Department at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN, from 1979 until retirement in 2002. He pastored St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Gilman, IL) and numerous mission churches in IL, IN, MI and OH. During his years at ELTS he served as vacancy pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church (Lancaster), Trinity Lutheran Church (Stoutsville), St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church (Tarlton), Israel Lutheran Church (Dutch Hollow), and he started a new ELCA Lutheran mission in Sunbury. He scripted, produced and directed evangelism movies, TV and radio programs and urban videos, wrote weekly syndicated newspaper articles, and produced a daily devotional program on radio station WHOK in Lancaster called “Family Devotions”. He is a member of Atonement Lutheran Church. He will always be remembered and appreciated for his daily prayers for his children and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Grace (Handschke) Zietlow of Marion, WI. He is survived by his loving wife Miriam of 61 years; 5 children, Dr. Paul Zietlow of Cedarburg WI, Mark (Lynda) Zietlow of Holland, MI, Dr. John (Kathy) Zietlow of North Canton, Mary (Scott) Turner of Pickerington, and Ruth (Clay) Bogart of Columbus; twelve grandchildren, David and Anne Zietlow, Timothy (Kristin) Zietlow, Michelle (Vytas) Ray and Matthew Zietlow, Julie and Christy Zietlow, Lindsay (Bradley) White and Brian Turner, Corrie (Joseph) Gladwell, Andrew and Betsie Bogart. Also surviving are two brothers Herbert (Patty) Zietlow of Iola, WI, and Gaylord (Joyce) Zietlow of Marion, WI, and sister-in-law Jeanne Zietlow of Waupaca, WI, as well as nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 16, 2011 from 11 am-12:30 pm with funeral services at 12:30 pm at Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43085.
