Dear Gloria and Chris, 
We want to add a note to say that we share your grief.  We all miss Rick and his cheerfulness and friendliness.  He made golf more fun for all of us. We say things now in remembrance of him  like “hit em long and straight”, or when someone missed a putt he would say “how did that putt not go in?”. I’m sure you’ve heard “that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it” many times.

My condolences to you and your family.  Rick was a special Guy and he was probably needed in Heaven to” keep up the banter”.  I will always remember our walks together with our “Doggy Kids”.  I just don’t have the words to express my sorrow when I happened to see this news on “Nextdoor Dunmere”. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time of loss.

I echo cousin Sally's thoughts about the fellow I knew as cousin Ricky.  I think of him wearing a red vest which was de rigeur attire for the annual family Christmas sing his family hosted for many years.  I last saw him at a family reunion where he insisted we all sing the Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah because we always ended the evening that way.  I think our event was sometime in the spring, no where close to Christmas.  We butchered it then as we always did, to much hilarity. He would say "good on you" to cheer us on, a phrase my daughter has now picked up and will take into the next generation.  Good on you Ricky, rest in peace.   Jane Wellman, Berkeley CA

Dear Gloria, Chris, Rachel, Avery and Cadi,   So Sorry to hear about the Loss of your dear Husband, Father and Grandpa.  He was so proud of his darling granddaughters, Avery and Cadi on Trick or Treat night in Dublin. He was a total "Ray of Sunshine" to all who knew him.  He and Art enjoyed several rounds of Golf together.  Treasure all of the wonderful memories you shared as a family together and they will sustain all of you.  Heaven must be a beautiful place, for it has so many special people up above.  Rick will always be your "Guardian Angel", sitting on your shoulder, watching everything you are doing, but when you are doing something you don't want him to see, He'll close His eyes, because that is how much He loved all of you. Our family was fortunate to spend time "over the fence" with Rick and Gloria - mostly playing with the dogs and catching up. He will be missed and we will be praying for Gloria and her family...Karen, Mike, and the boys

Rick was always wonderful to my two boys. We would often swap stories about our experiences in Korea. Nice man and big loss for our community.

Rick always had a kind word and a smile for everyone in the Dunmere neighborhood, he was a supporter of Scouting by his annual purchase of Boy Scout popcorn over the many years our sons were selling popcorn.  He was at our patio party this summer sharing a good time with our neighborhood, Gloria always at his side. I will miss seeing them walking together through the neighborhood. Rick enjoyed the world of travel and helped to cut the swath for the rest of us.  His presence and professional acumen raised the bar.  He will be remembered long.

When time allowed at the golf course, Rick and I sometimes spent it talking about the state of the world.  No matter how dire things seemed Rick was the most positive and hopeful person I have ever met. Just last week I sent flower bulbs home with Rick - a hopeful thought of the spring to come. It will be emptier at Tartan Fields without Rick to brighten it up.

I played many rounds of golf with Herrick and it was always alot of laughs and fun. Rick did not have the prettiest of swings but yet he won several of our Golf (Majors) Tournaments . Recently his putting was outstanding and frankly unbelievably good. The "Majors" tour and Sunday Golf will not be the same . Rick -you will be sorely missed by your Golfing buddies. Dear Laylin Family,
     It was with profound shock and sorrow that I heard of Rick's passing.  You may have heard him mention my name, Ray Grantham, as we were in adjoining towns during our Peace Corps years in Korea and spent quite a bit of time together.  We were also roomies at the last three Peace Corps Korea reunions. Ironically while we both lived in California at the same time for 30 years we never knew of each other's proximity. During our time together, the last being in September at the Peace Corps 50th Korea celebration, we had many opportunities to share information about our lives.  I learned so much about you and how much you were the center of his love as well as his concerns. He was very proud of all of you and as you must know, loved you very much.  While I feel bereft of a friend who has left a hole in my life that can never be filled, I know the vacuum he has left in your lives has to be truly devastating.  I am at a loss for words as to how to give you meaningful consolation.  Hopefully it will suffice to say that my thoughts are with you during this extremely difficult time and hope that the strong family ties fostered by Rick will help you weather the storm.   Although he is gone, his supportive love endures.

I was saddened to learn of Rick's passing. I will miss him as a golfing friend, colleague Starter at the Tartan Field Golf Club and fellow liberal. I enjoyed the many political conversations we had during the time I knew Rick. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

I spent many years with the Laylin family as Ned's assistant, Grandfather Laylin's confidant and the early years of Rick's life in the Peace Corp plus rest of family-Dana, Jeff and Pete. I am so sorry to learn of the loss of a dear cousin and friend. Beyond childhood memories, I cherish the time I spent with Rick--including walking Pete and Willow (our respective dogs) and playing a round of golf--a couple of years ago when he and Gloria welcomed me for an overnight stay in their home. Such a warm, intelligent and kind man will be missed by everyone who knew him. My deepest condolences to Gloria and to all family, friends, and communities he so well served.
