William, Tony, Lenard, Julian, Adrian, Myra, Monica and Noreen. My dear brothers and sisters. It is with the greatest sadness that I write this tribute about the woman known by me, even in my old age, respectfully, only as Mrs. Easter. I am deeply saddend that I am unable to leave my current assignment here in South Korea to be with all  of you to grieve the lost of, and celebrate the life of, your mother and my mother.

My fond memories about Mrs. Easter include that always warm, loving, welcoming, encouraging and comforting smile that seemed to make even my greatest fears dissapear even when, as a child, I was getting in trouble with Adrian, and feared the punishment  that would surely follow, or the time, when as a young man, the two of us sat alone out front of her house in Lorain Ohio, as I tried to conjure up the right words to tell her that I was going to drive down to the Columbus area to profess my love to her daughter Monica. What a strange person I must have been in her sight; I was a nervous wreck, but never once did she ever say or do anything to make me feel anything less than special. I believe I was always captivated by her ever present, quiet, inner strength and that glowing beauty that was still with her in well into her later years.

I believe if I had to sum it all up; what made Mrs. Easter so special to me, is the ease at which she was able to make everyone around her feel so special, even a red-headed, freckeled-face troublesome little boy and nervous young man.

I am most greatful for the time God allowed me to know such a strong and beautiful woman as your mother was. Know that I will celebrate a special Mass for all of you. Your sorrow is my sorrow, your joy is my joy. 

Though years and miles may have distanced us over the past decade or so, I want to thank you for providing me an opportunity, by way of  this tribute wall, to reach across the many miles that separate us and express my joy and sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Monica,  You have my condolences on the passing of your mother.  Based on her picture I feel certain you are the Monica Easter I worked with at Columbia Gas.  We lost touch after I retired.  If I am right, it would be wonderful to hear from you.  If not, please excuse the intrusion during this sad time.

My mother, Hortense Easter, passed away at 10:30pm on Wednesday, March 9th. A couple of months ago, when she realized that her illness was indeed terminal, it was her wish to die peacefully at home, and with dignity. She did just that as she ultimately left us in the manner which she deserved, comfortably and without pain. My sister, Monica, and I will always cherish that final time that we spent with her.

Dear Adrian & Gretchen,

Though we never had the opportunity to meet your beloved mother, We know what a wonderful person and mother she was from the thoughts and memories you shared of here.  In the history of time, no one has ever come up with the right words or gestures to ease the pain of such a loss.  Just know that we are here for you and you are in our prayers.  We love you dearly.  Stay strong in God.

My dear Aunt Hortense:

There is so much that I'm going to miss about her.  She had a beautiful smile and sense of humor that could slay most anyone, in more than one way, if you weren't careful.  In fact when Dad and I went to visit her the Christmas before last, she told a naughty little joke that still brings a smile to my face.

She was:
A wonderful cook - her cobblers and stuffed cabbage were my favorites
An empathetic listener - as a child, I told her of bad dreams I was having and she offered solace
A patient mother - this was likely a survival tactic on her part
A loving sister - Mom loved talking to her and found her support invaluable
A great story teller - she could regale Dad for hours sharing events of her life
A lovely presence even when she wasn't feeling well

I could go on and on, so let me summarize by saying that our family was so blessed by her presence and we won't be the same without her.

Anytime I was in her presence I was loathe to depart it and looked forward to each new meeting with fond memories of the last time we were together.  She had a way of making everyone feel special.  I'll never forget the Christmas that she bought me my first cologne.  Love's babysoft.  I felt so grown up and special.  Noreen and I were such tomboys, when we were kids, so it was sort of the first step towards becoming a young lady...........
