Irma Jean Mattern

Irma J. Mattern, age 88, of Bluffton Indiana, formerly Upper Arlington, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at River Terrace Estates, Bluffton Indiana. Irma was born on November 4, 1927 in Warren, Ohio to Oscar and Iva Hyde. She was married to Randall (Ozzie) Mattern who died in 2008. Irma is survived by her three children, Suzanne Huffman (Keith) of Bluffton, Indiana, Paula Britton Shepherd (Brad) of Northfield, OH and Kent Mattern of Prescott, AZ; and 6 grandchildren, Patrick, Jordan and Michael Huffman; Sydney and Alex Shepherd; and Dylan Mattern and 4 great grandchildren, Daniel, Ozzie, Rocky, and Calloway Huffman. Irma graduated from Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio and earned a BS in Elementary Education form Baldwin Wallace College where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She taught elementary school for years. She was married in 1951 to Randall Mattern. She was a devoted member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Irma was active in volunteer work for numerous Columbus organizations including: Riverside Methodist Hospital Board, AAUW, Center of Science and Industry, Creative Living, Life Care Alliance (Meals on Wheels), Hospice and Riverside Methodist Church. She did part time work at Schoedinger Funeral Home in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Her interests included tennis, line dancing and creative cooking. Those who knew Irma will remember her most by her generous heart and her devotion to friends. Family will receive friends at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd. Columbus, OH 43221on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 1p.m to 3 p.m. to celebrate Irma's life.
