Jack Erwin Peterson passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, at the age of 80, surrounded by his loving family and friends in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
He was born on June 29, 1945, in West Orange, New Jersey, to Erwin and Blanche Peterson. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where he attended Hinsdale Central High School and graduated from Bradley University with a degree in Civil Structural Engineering.
Jack went on to have a distinguished career as a civil engineer, playing a vital role in the development of many banks, buildings, and skyscrapers that shape the Columbus skyline today. He was hired by National City Bank to build their computer center and their high-rise downtown, and he designed and built all the free-standing Bank of Ohio locations around town. Later, he was hired by Verizon to maintain their buildings in numerous states. His professional legacy continues to stand tall across the region—a testament to his skill and dedication.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was always ready to lend a hand, share his knowledge, or offer his steady support to those around him. A true craftsman, Jack was an expert at building and repairing anything—especially woodwork. Whether constructing a deck, designing an entertainment center, or tackling home projects, he approached every task with precision and pride. His engineering mind and skilled hands could make or fix just about anything, and he was always eager to teach others how things worked.
Beyond his engineering achievements, Jack was deeply involved in his community. He coached Kiwanis soccer, served as treasurer of the Upper Arlington Civic Association, and was active in Indian Guides and Cub Scouts.
Jack had a lifelong love of the outdoors. From early spring until the first freeze, you could find him out on his boat—taking friends for rides, helping his kids waterski, going fishing, or meticulously cleaning every inch of his boat. He was happiest on the water, exploring lakes and rivers all over Ohio. A true family man, Jack also cherished summers spent with his family on Lake Erie, creating lasting memories by the beach.
Jack will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and quiet strength. His spirit lives on in the many things he built, the people he helped, and the love he shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie; his children Scott (Julia) Peterson, Greg Peterson, and Heather (Matthew) Spisak; grandchildren Siena, Justine, Koen, and Luke; and his sister Jan (Richard) Permenter.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at Schoedinger Northwest. Family will receive friends on Friday, November 7, from 4:00–6:00 PM at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Road in Upper Arlington.
The interment service will take place on Saturday, November 8, at 12:00 p.m. at Green Lawn Cemetery Chapel, 1000 Greenlawn Ave, Columbus, OH 43223.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor his memory by helping someone in need, fixing something with your own hands, or spending a peaceful day on the water—just as Jack would have loved.
