I took care of Mr. Hoptry at The James Cancer Hospital as his PCA. The first time I met him, I couldn't get the thermometer to read his temperature. So I had to take it like 3 times. He asked me, "Do you know what your doing?", I smiled and said, "yes, it's not me it's this machine". After the 3rd attempt of taking his temperature, I got it to read and I said, "okay, all done", and went to pull out the thermometer from his mouth and he bit on it so I couldn't take it...I laughed, and laughed. He was a very amusing guy always a pleasure even when he had his bad days, and his son always called me trouble. Every time he'd see me he would say "there's trouble". I really enjoyed having Mr. Hoptry as my patient. I was so shocked and sad to hear of his passing away, I am sorry for his family's loss.

An Ohio State Stadium brick with the engraving "In Memory of James R. Hoptry 1941-2014" will be placed in the South Stadium Plaza of The Ohio State University "Horseshoe" in July of 2015.

The Members of Genoa Township Professional Firefighters would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. James R. Hoptry.

Jim was a great guy and a wonderful friend to my family since the Hoptrys moved in across the street and became our neighbors over 40 years ago. His rich sense  of humor always brought fun and laughter to any gathering. I think he taught us all a lot about not taking ourselves too seriously and remembering to enjoy life. Jim was truely always there for his friends and family , in the fun times and the hard times. The McVey family will greatly miss Jim, but we all will keep fond memories of time we were with him .

The ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about death. When their souls got to the entrance to heaven, the guards asked 2 questions. Their answers determined whether or not they were able to enter: "have you found joy in your life?" and "Has your life brought joy to others?" Uncle Jim loved life and everything about it, especially his family and friends and to know him certainly brought joy and laughter to others. He was an unforgettable character-one of a kind

None of us knows how long he shall live or when his time will come. All that will be left of our brief lives is the pride our children feel when they speak our names. I know I am better for having shared the same path for a while (even if it was looking for your ball !)

When you lose someone you love, they never really leave you-they just move into a special place in your heart

You and Jim have been a large part of our lives  as friends for so many years. Our hearts go out to you and your family and will always hold Jim's memory in our hearts. We will miss his sprit,the time spent with both of you and we know he's soaring with the angels - teaching them how to make his "special meatballs" and spagettli.!!! His star shines bright in our hearts . We will always be here for you-

There are no words to describe how much I love you, your Dad, and your Family!  You all have meant the absolute world to me since we first met summer of 80. Your Dad leaves an incredible legacy in you all.  A life lived strong, lives on, in our memories and in our hearts. 
Sometimes the Lord takes the pain away from the faithful, and sometimes He takes the faithful away from the pain.
