

James G. Knight, 96, of Grove City, Ohio formerly of Nelsonville, Ohio passed away September 27, 2020. He was born July 20th,1924 in Logan, Ohio. The son of James D. Knight and Ethel Gibbs Knight. Jim graduated from Nelsonville High School in 1942. He was attending the Ohio State University when he was inducted into the US armed forces in World War II. He became a staff Sargent in Co. 3, 381 Regiment, 96 Infantry Division. He was in combat on the Philippines and Okinawa. He received a bronze star from Okinawa. After the war he was employed as a lab tech at the Poston Generation Station by AEP. He retired in 1983 after 31 years. He was an active in AHH of the Masonic Bodies in Nelsonville serving as Presiding Officer. In 1979-1980 he served as the Grand Master of the Grand Council Royal and Select Masons of Ohio. He was a member of the Athens Commandry No.15, THEA Chapter No. 192 of the Eastern Star, a 32nd degree Mason and a life member of Elks No.543, American Legion No.229 and VFW No. 3467. Jim was on the Nelsonville Public Library and Oval Boards, The Nelsonville Civil Service commission, Mt. St Mary Hospital Board and Several times as President and Toast Master of the NHS Alumni Association. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian church of Nelsonville, involved as an elder, trustee, clerk of session and Sunday school support. Jim's ancestors were longtime residents of Nelsonville area, coming from England to settle here in 1820. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley K. Gunyou of Minnesota. Survived by his wife of 73 years, daughter; Christine (Glen) Tharp, granddaughters; Kate (Brendan Murphy) Tharp of California, and Anna (Kevin) Carwile of North Carolina, great grandchildren; Judah and Xyla Murphy.
