Jean Marie (Vogel) Casey, 94, of Columbus, Ohio, left us suddenly on September 13, 2025. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandma, great-grandma, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend to all she met, Jean will be greatly missed and forever remembered for her kindness, caring, and generous, giving spirit (and especially her apple pie!).
Jean was born on March 20, 1931, in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, to Walter and Monica (Fox) Vogel. She graduated from Upper Sandusky High School and started nursing school at Mount Carmel hospital in Columbus. She returned home shortly thereafter to help care for her 6-year-old brother, David, when her mother suddenly passed away.
Jean married Robert (Bob) Casey, June 21, 1952. Together, Jean and Bob raised five children, moving from Upper Sandusky to New York and Pennsylvania, before settling in Columbus in 1962. Jean was a loving wife and mother and took great pride and joy in caring for her family. She worked hard both inside and outside the home, including 25 years in an oral surgeon’s office. Her caring and thoughtful spirit was unmistakable.
Jean had many passions. Her Catholic faith was strong; she and Bob were founding members of St. Anthony’s Parish. Shoes were also important in Jean’s life. She grew up amidst the family business, Vogel’s Shoe Store, where she met Bob, a young shoe salesman, and supported him throughout his life-long career in shoes. She played bridge for more than 50 years with her dear friends. She loved cooking dinner for family gatherings, and dessert was always the favorite course, thanks to her amazing baking talent! Her greatest joy came from spending time with family including her children, 7 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. She had an amazing gift of connecting in a unique way with each member of the family, listening, learning, caring, and making all feel special. Jean loved the color blue, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and sending cards and letters to all to remember big and small events in their lives.
Jean is survived by her brother David Vogel, children Nicki (Lonny) Harrison, Cecilia (Doug) Boyer, Kathleen Clement, Christine (Mike) Salsbury, and Robert (Dana) Casey, grandchildren Tracy (Hans) Ashlock, Kelly Harrison, Austin (Lillia) Guter, Madison (Brian) Piehl, Nicole (Bre) Casey, Ashlee (Jake) Tomcheck, and David Casey, and great-grandchildren Luke, Jesse, Gabe, Liv, Nico, Leo, Carlo, Walker, and Rylee, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert V. Casey, parents Walter and Monica (Fox) Vogel, brother Thomas Vogel, and sister-in-law Helen Vogel.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Josephine Bakhita (formerly St. Elizabeth) Parish, 6077 Sharon Woods Blvd, at 11am. Visitation precedes mass from 10-11am at the church. Burial service follows mass at Resurection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Catholic Charities or a charity of your choice.
