

Joan Hoffman Allen, age 81, of Columbus, Ohio passed away on December 2, 2009 from Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born June 6, 1928 to the late Robert and Mabel Hoffman. Joan graduated from Columbus School for Girls in 1946, spent 2 years attending Bradford Junior College in Bradford, Mass. and graduated from Vassar College in 1950. Following graduation, she taught English in Paris, followed by a short marriage to Erik Wilhelm Witzke. They resided in Copenhagen. In 1953 Joan returned to Columbus and later married Sidney S. Allen, who preceded her in death. Joan was a devoted wife and mother, and an avid golfer, tennis player and bowler. She was a world traveler and especially loved her winters in Pompano Beach, Fla. Joan was an animal lover (especially her beloved cats!), had a great appreciation for literature and was a past member of the Columbus Country Club. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Katherine L. Allen, Laura J. Allen (Kenneth Lewis) and Linda Allen Custer; sister, Carol Hoffman and her first cousin, Marilyn Erickson. Visitation will be 2-5pm Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, OH 43230. Graveside service 10am Monday, December 7, at Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, OH.
