John Walker Harris II, 79, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on April 24, 2026. He shared a lifelong love story with his wife, Joyce S. Harris, whom he met at church in the sixth grade. They were married on November 30, 1968, and spent 54 years together until her passing.
He was born on June 2, 1946, in Warren, Ohio, to the late John W. Harris and Mary (DeArment).
John proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and the Army National Guard. He went on to build a long and steady career as an accountant, retiring after more than 30 years of government service.
Above all, John was a devoted father and family man. He was generous, had an easy, slightly lopsided smile, and a unique sense of humor that those who knew him will always remember.
He found joy in the simple things—time with his family, a bowl of ice cream, a good game of chess, and swimming. One of his proudest accomplishments was building a log home alongside his family, a reflection of both his dedication and the deep value he placed on being together.
He is survived by his children: Ladine Harris, John W. Harris III, Sandy Vance, Thelma Harris, and Mary (Brian) Morton; his grandchildren: Gabriella Harris, Caleb Vance, and Noah Vance; and many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his siblings: Marge (the late Sam) Clawges, Bill (Brenda) Harris, and Winnora Orr. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Dudley Harris, Martha Van Reenen, and Susie Lyons.
John valued his family above all else, and the love he gave so freely will continue to live on through them.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026 @ 10:30am at Schoedinger Funeral Home, 5360 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43232.
