John Hunter Moore, 95 of Columbus, a cherished member of his community and a devoted family man, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, following a period of declining health and leaving behind a legacy of kindness, service, and unwavering faith.
Born in Warrensville, Pennsylvania, John was one of six children born to the late Charles and Nealy (Hayslett) Moore and was a 1947 graduate of Williamsport High School in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Following his high school years, he honorably served his country in the United States Air Force, a time he greatly valued for the discipline and camaraderie that it provided to him.
Following his honorable discharge, John began a lengthy career with the Ohio Department of Transportation, where he retired after assisting in the intricate design of safe and efficient highway systems and roadside rest areas throughout the State. A passionate supporter of The Ohio State Buckeyes, John remained a loyal fan throughout his life. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 490.
His personality was marked by warmth and generosity. Known for his welcoming nature, he always sought opportunities to help others, often stopping to assist stranded motorists, despite his family's objections. He was a charter member of the Shady Lane Presbyterian Church in Columbus where his faith and heart of servitude was evident in his continued involvement, providing maintenance support and generously volunteering for decades at the local community food pantry.
John’s biggest passion in life was undoubtedly his family, with whom he embraced God’s bountiful blessings. He believed in serving others and especially his country. He loved a good, home-cooked meal especially those prepared by his devoted wife, Joan. One could always count on John to come up with a very clever/witty play on words.
John is survived by his wife of over 73 years, Joan A. (Fleshman) Moore of the residence, his four children, Deborah (Mark) Kilbarger of Carroll, Jack (Lei) Moore of Columbus, Daniel (Tracy) Moore of New Philadelphia and Ann (John) Alexander of Carroll; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, John; his “adopted” fourth son, Brian; his great grandson, Hunter; four brothers and a sister.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Care360 Hospice in memory of John. Donations may be sent to 3455 Mill Run Drive, Suite 900, Hilliard, OH 43026.
Family will receive friends Monday, June 30, 2025, from 12-2PM at SCHOEDINGER EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5360 E. Livingston Ave, followed by prayers at his final resting place at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
