Prof. Morral was the department head at the time when I was admitted for my Ph.D. study at UConn in August of 2001. He wanted me to design and publish the UConn MSE website at the time and generously had ordered an extra pay for the job. This was my first encounter with him and I was fortunate to have been  a graduate student in the department he was heading. I am very saddened by his passing and I extend my deepest condolences to his family.

Even if I am not here in person for John's service today, my heart is here with all of you to celebrate John’s life – a life well lived! As a distinguished professor in Metallurgy, John is often well remembered for his contribution in the scientific filed, but I always remember him as dearest mentor and friend who offered me many invaluable life lessons. When I arrived in American as a post-doc working in John’s lab at University of Connecticut 26 years ago, John is the only American that I knew at the time. He welcomed me into his lab and his family with an open arms. My American dream started with John. He volunteered as a “passenger” when I needed to practice driving for a driver’s license. He illustrated to me how important networking is for the success of one’s professional life using his own experiences. He showed what American hospitality is by inviting all his foreign students to his house every Thanksgiving holiday. As a cancer survivor at a young age, he taught me to never give up hope and to always look at the glass half full instead of half empty. As a well-respected professor in his field, he taught me to always be humble and never stop learning new things…For me, John is not only the wisest guy but also the kindest soul I have ever met…I will miss him forever. When I told my mother twice in 8th grade that I was thinking of becoming a pastor, she quickly replied both times: "It will be a hard job, but a happy one." She was right on both counts. John Morral knew that too. He knew it was hard because he knew that a Pastor has to relate to people of all ages, backgrounds, educational level, and abilities. And all church members, including the Pastor, are sinners and make mistakes. Unlike many professors today he did not hide the fact that he was a Christian.  He was also a strong supporter of me, something all Pastors need because of the difficulty of their 24 hours a day seven days a week jobs.

Dear Dot,
We are deeply saddened to know that your beloved John died this past December.
His smile was always guaranteed when he walked our neighborhood with one (or two)
of your dogs.  We have missed both of you.  We will lift you and all who love John up in prayer, especially on July 30th, as you celebrate his amazing life.

I was deeply saddened when I learned that John passed away.  It was always a great pleasure to work with John whether it was in workshops or on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion.  His positive personality always lit up a room and inspired everybody.  John will live on in my memory as a brilliant scientist, mentor and friend.

It is with great sadness that I have been made aware of the passing of our Dear John, a man of integrity, dedication, and with an accomplished scientific contribution to the materials field. John devoted his life to pursuing new knowledge and passing along his passion for science and education to students of all ages. John will be greatly missed in the scientific community. John was a true renaissance man. I will always remember discussing writing, and literature, and football, and all topics under the sun with him at the wonderful parties he and Dot hosted at their home with the Morral extended family. He will be greatly missed.

Doctor Morral was my facility advisor at UConn and inspired me to pursue Materials Science. My memories of him and the team he created are some of the best in my life.

He taught me a very valuable lesson: never throw out data! Thank you John for your leadership, scientific curiosity, and friendship.

The news of John's passing saddened me deeply and I offer my condolences for his family and close friends. John was one of the leaders in our field in science. I had the privilege to work with him for the journal that he edited. We shared our “love” for phase diagrams and John was the one person to talk to, discuss and resolve the most complex problems. He was always open, generous, and kind. And he knew my love for folk music. So one jolly night, many years ago after a conference meeting, he invited me to join him and Dorothy to a folk music event and all of us joined in with the folk dancing. John was much more than a great scientist. I trust that John is now on his way to a better world. I will miss him.

I knew Professor John Morral since 1970, when he was one of my examiners for Ph.D. qualifying exams at University of Illinois.  Then we reconnected when I started working at Pratt & Whitney.  John was highly regarded as an expert in the field of thermodynamic and phase diagram and had sought his advise and consultation on several occasions. I remember having many interesting conversations about his bee keeping hobby and especially his love for Indian desserts!  John is a great loss to the Metallurgical community and his presence will be greatly missed.

My sincere condolences for Dr. Morral’s passing.  May you be comforted by the outpouring of love and support surrounding you and your family.  I had the privilege of meeting Dr. John Morral at The University of Connecticut in the Fall of 1990.  He was my advisor for my thesis at the graduate school in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science.  Although I only spent two years with him doing research, I carried with me what I have learned from him to my professional life.  His insight, his integrity, his fairness, his enthusiasm and curiosity for the phase diagram, and his patience were unparalleled.  I am forever grateful to his guidance and his belief for a fruitful research project.  It was an honor of a life time to learn from Dr. Morral.  His smile and kindness will forever live on.

Morallism - Searching for the Beauty of Science

To most of us who know John, he was a kind and humble person; he was a retired professor who devoted his time to be the editor-in-chief of Journal of Phase Diagrams and Diffusion. Since February 2017, John and I collaborated to study thermodynamics and phase diagrams, and I have known more about John.

John had a lifetime interest in phase diagrams and diffusion. He had deep understanding in math and physics and applied them to phase diagrams, diffusion and other areas. Symmetry and simplicity were what he was searching for in his study. He loved to use geometric concepts to interpret phase diagrams, like “double-cone”, “rose diagram”, “characteristic line”. He had the ability to extract the concise concepts from complex relations. The most profound term he coined is "zero-phase-fraction". He was so proud of this phrase that he would like it to be carved on his headstone. During our short period of collaboration, John and I studied Gibbs original work, reviewed many math concepts, searched for historical literature. We shared joy after we solved problems. He loved the geometric beauty of phase diagrams, as beauty as roses. On the valentine’s day in 2005, John Cahn, his PhD advisor, presented “Morallism” in the TMS Meeting to honor “the youthful John E. Morral on reaching the venerable age of 65”. 

John never stopped to explore and learn. Exploration made him happy. I am incredibly lucky to be able with him in his last exploration.

John will live with us forever.

Please accept my deepest condolences for John's passing. John and I first met in 1989 when he came to Sweden for the CALPHAD conference. I greatly appreciate John's support and mentoring over the years, particularly since I came to the USA in 1996. John was a true gentlemen with a big heart.

Dad-you were the kindest, most trusting, and supportive person I ever knew. You were always there for me-even when I made choices I knew you thought were crazy. You gave me my weirdly morbid sense of humor, my love for gardening and animals, and taught me to look at the world as a better place then I believed it was. You showed everyone you met a kindness and true interest in what they had to say. You had something very few people posses-a REAL heart. The world truly lost an amazing force of energy and an intellect I think will rarely be matched. Thank you for finding me 51 years ago, and giving me everything you had to become the person I am today. You never let life slow you down and I will try to carry that energy with me as I go on. I know you are still here with me-and would appreciate a good laugh at this point. So here you go.

John is as fine a man as I have met . Competently brilliant, collegial, always smiling and ready to help.  I know John was an inspiration to all those he worked with and taught. His research was meaningful and he kept writing and inspiring after he retired from OSU. I am privileged to have know John for over 25 years. He will be greatly missed by so many. My sympathies and condolences to Dot , the Morral family and all of those whose lives he touched.

We are very saddened by the loss of John.  May all of his family be comforted by knowing how loved John was, and that he profoundly and positively affected the people around him.  John was a philomath and also an amazing teacher, and those traits combined to make him an excellent role model.  He was "Uncle John", but he was more of a grandfather to Carrie, and his kindness was never unappreciated.   We all miss him, and send our deepest sympathies to Dot and the rest of his family.  John will forever be in our hearts.
